Title: Hickory Warbow
Post by: Del the cat on January 27, 2025, 04:34:48 pm
My first heavy Hickory bow from a board. I sawed the back to follow a growth ring which gave a hint of natural reflex. I was aiming for 120# @ 31" but it ended up at 100# as I cut it a tad too fine on second rough out.
Lower limb (left) is a tad stiff, but I'll let my test pilot shoot a couple of dozen through it before I do any final tweaking.
It's 75 1/2" ntn, heavily heat treated, it's a little flat bellied for an ELB, but whatevs ;)
It'll be interesting to see how it performs as it has taken very little set.

Nice one Del,
Interested to see how it performs, I don't know how heavy that bit of Hickory is but maybe it might be better suited to the 100lbs mark?

cool bow, Del. I'm curious how the hickory will hold up. I'm sure the heat treating will help.

Looks great, Del!  The video is fun, though it cries out for a scream sound effect a few seconds after each shot.

That worked very well Del  (SH)
Chucking a 1/2" arrow 200+yards is good going for that draw, very cool.  (-S ,if I ever come across some hickory board I'll probably give it a try now.  :).

Looking good, Del.  :OK  What are your thoughts on hickory for war bows? How much set is it taking. I'm sure the tempering helps.

I think those French knights have something new to worry about!
