Title: Cut to much out at fade.
Post by: Selfbowman on February 01, 2024, 05:08:23 pm
I’m building a 45# bow.70” ntn, 9” handle, 1-3/4 wide at fades, 1/1/2” mid limb 5/16 wide tip. 31” draw. Pretty sure I over cut my fades.any suggestions?

Would this work assuming that would be thick enough for 45# bow?

You should be fine with 1&3/4" wide osage limbs. A bow like that usually ends up with pretty shallow limbs.

You want to take it slow, and get the limbs bending properly, before doing any drastic stock removal, near the fades to avoid any hinges.

Arvin, I just do a 4” rectanglular handle, no shelf, and 2-1/2” or 3” fades. But your penciled in fade looks very close to what I do on all my bows. I’ve used that up to 57# at 28” bows from 63” to 68” with no problems. I think your in good shape.
Here’s the snakey bow that I haven’t finished yet.

Same here.  I think you still have some room.  Not much but still a 45-50lb bow in there.

There is an easy way to find out if you cut too much out and you could even figure out the correction if you don't mind cutting this bow shorter and building another one for the 70" bow. Put a slightly long string on it and gradually start pulling it to fid how much weight you can put on it before it bends too much. If you can make it to 45# you are good to go.

Thanks guys I new I was pushing the envelope when I over cut it. I have room to move the fade back another 1-4to1/2”also. This lady is tall! And can shoot a flight bow. I don’t know how many records but 6 in one year!
