Title: Progress pictures
Post by: Allyn T on January 26, 2024, 05:08:24 pm
I thought I'd post some progress pictures of a piece I was working on today for the new guys. I worked all the way around alternating faces. I will say this piece made it ready to work except for one spot that had worse material in it.

Below is a short video showing how to undercut low spots

Not real sure what you were trying to show there. Only a 8 second video. At least that’s what I saw. Definitely need help with my zigzagging. I am getting better at it but still not good by no means. Been working on a bow last couple days and haven’t hit any rock. Going to be waiting on some stuff to get delivered so I’m gonna try and whack some tomorrow. Flint is definitely harder than obsidian for me to make anything with. I think I’m slowly figuring some stuff out.
Thanks for posting the video.

So I was showing how I left the platform high on the center line to get it above the divot I was removing. Normally when you leave it high and hit straight down the flake won't run it'll be a short chop. Using support though I was able to get the flake to run underneath and go further than it wanted to.

That’s something I’m still trying to figure out is the support thing. I been trying to figure out the indirect stuff right now. Watching jack crafty it looks really easy but, that’s of course not the case. Slowly getting better at it. Flint knapping is a very unique skill that’s going to take a lot longer than I thought it would. I think my old arthritic hands aren’t helping much either.. I’m still good but don’t have the dexterity or strength of my youth.

Nice work Allyn . That’s looking really pretty so far.

How did you get the video to post? I could see it without clicking on the link

Expecting nice things from that stone now that you shared it with us.

No pressure lol

Thanks BJ I'm working on making that one into a knife for a friend, I promised her one. Parnell I uploaded it to imgur and copied the BBC code. On my end it looked like it didn't work but I'm glad you guys can see it. It was my first time trying to post a video here.

I didn't want to start a new post for this but I made another video. The point of the video is that I didn't try to remove all the mass at once, I worked my way across.

That is a nice explanation without having to explain a lot.

Nice job taking off the tough stuff
