Had this nice stave but had propeller In it . Let’s see how much I can get out.
-
Heat the back of handle.
-
That got a good bit out of the handle section.its hard to see in pic but it changed the handle section about a strong 1/16 of an inch in a 1-1/2” thick handle.
-
Now do we want reflex or deflex in the handle ? I like reflex it puts more stress at fade to mid limb that’s why I make them wider at that point.
-
Better pic of the belly side showing the heat correction.
-
Filling to receive the shim.
-
What’s the deal? barely touch the screen in the wrong place and some advertisements pop up!! Shim is glued in with titebond 3.
-
I'm getting lots of adds too, but honestly, it's a small inconvenience for the privilege of using this site. I certainly look here more than at the magazine so... I reckon they got to make money.
Thats a unique way to remove twist bud. I bet it places a lot of stress in that one spot. Have you done that many times before?
-
You know, if this works out well for you, I'm going to have to re evaluate how I do things. By the way, how deep was the cut you made and how thick is that handle?
-
Kevin it was about 2”thick . I reduced it so I can glue a piece on the belly.
-
Piece added on to lock shim in place.
-
Heating and taking the propeller out as I heat and clamp.
-
First time to straighten first side.
-
I like how archery brings people to a commonality. We are thousands of miles apart, but both doing exactly the same thing with the same goal.
I like how you locked that shim in place, and dang those glue lines are on point my friend! What's your end stats looking g like for this one?
-
First heat session complete and handle piece glued on with EA40. Now wait till tomorrow to pull it off and see what we have.
-
Kevin it’s looking like 1-3/4” at fades 1-1/2 at mid limb 5/16” at tip. 67”ntn 9” handle. 48-50# at 28-29”. I wish the smart guys could give me perfect diminishing mass on A limb 28” weighing 8oz total per limb. I’d have some idea how much to trap it. I don’t think they can do it. I’ve ask to many! Second heat treat and straighten complete.
-
Lookin like progress Arvin. I like it!
-
Glue dry and most propeller gone after two heat sessions. This piece of wood is taking the heat pretty good.
-
Shim and add on glued on.
-
Going for side to side straighten.
-
What propeller?
-
Heat session 3 . Ive smoothed up the rough blank . Got the blank about the same thickness. I will heat and let the bow limb float to its desired place between the plywood shims. I’ve found at this stage if everything is even in thickness the grain will almost straighten its self., I just shim as I go here.
-
Heat session 3 complete.
-
How do y’all measure a non bend handle? This is how I do it.9”
-
Not perfect but good.
-
Anyone want to see the rest of the build.
-
You bet, bring it on. I always enjoy learning from someone who has your experience.
-
Ahhhh. Yes!
-
Nah, this is really boring ;) Just kiddin. keep it going (-P
-
You know I love watching you work Arvin. :) :)

What kinda silly question is that? Of course we do.
I’d like to help you with the smart guy answers but I’m not a smart guy bowyer. I’m always interested in learning from the guys that are though
