It’s been to long since I have posted a bow. And certainly too long finishing up this one. Sometimes that happens when you are trying to get it perfect.
I got this stave from a pretty special guy. I didn’t even ask for it. He simply sent it to me. I couldn’t compensate him enough for it. It was by far the nicest stave I ever saw.
Of course me being me. I could see two bows in it.
It had very thick late wood rings and hardly anything for early wood rings. It behaved completely different than any Osage I have split in the past. Usually it kinda follows the early wood ring. This split right off the top of the stave.
I was flabbergasted.
I stood there holding what should have been the bonus stave. The stave the real bow should have come from was ruined.
I proceeded much more carefully and stored that experience in the do not do again file.
I wanted to make this bow for an event I would like to attend someday. Someday is probably what I should have named it, but I named her “Flats or Bust”lol probably not the best name for a Selfbow.
I built this bow with the flight shoot in mind. I had it shooting really nice at my draw. I originally was going to go 50@28”, but I have been shooting it and it really shoots nice. The event take place in September and no way I’m getting out of here then. Someday. In the meantime I’m hunting and shooting with this one. It feels really good.
Thanks so much Arvin

That is an awesome bow BJ. It's amazing how nice the osage that Arvin buys is compared to what we usually have to work with. I'm glad you got a bow out of it...and such a nice one. Love the profile. :OK

Nice bow Brian . What’s the spec?
-
Yes this is certainly way different wood than I’m used to. I usually don’t mind. I always like a challenge and I also like the character of the wiggly ones. Not a lot of character in this one, but it sure does shoot nice.
Glad I got the bow too. I would have really felt terrible if I didn’t.

In all honesty Arvin I’m not positive. The way I remember it was right around 50@25”. I usually pull about 24”.
I figure I can shoot and hunt with this one now. When I take it to the flats I can take some off, have a fresh belly. Get it out to 28”, lighten up the tips and recurves. Then see how far it’ll fling an arrow.
-
A troublesome start, but the end result speaks for itself. A credit to your skill.
Lovely property you live on, too. I respect a man who has a good vegetable garden, and fruit trees.

Awesome bow, BJ! I always like seeing your bows on here. Love those tight recurves!! Excellent tiller.
-
Very nice bow Bj. Love your work. Maybe a contender for flight one day too.

Thanks Hamish. I won’t be trying to split any staves off of very thin early wood staves again. Especially ones that are gifted to me. Really glad I had enough left to get a good bow from.
Thanks for the nice comments about the fruit trees and garden. That’s actually my dads place. I have a bigger garden but smaller fruit trees. I enjoy taking care of them all.

Wouldn’t it be great to get a bunch of bowyers from here to meet up at the flats to fling arrows as far as we could?
I know Arvin would love that and so would I.

Well that’s my plan and I’m sticking to it. Hope to see you there.

Thanks Pappy. I don’t know if it’s the prettiest bow I ever made, but it certainly is a beautiful shooting bow.

Thanks Pat. My goal is to get it to the flats someday. Even if I can’t pull it and have to have someone else draw it for me. A successful hunt or two along the way would be nice though to.

Thanks Chris. Maybe we can drag you out there too. I’d like to see how far you can fling one.

Never gonna happen, pal. My interest in wood bows lies elsewhere.

I guess part of me wants to make an arrow fly far.
I remember for a short time we had a green fiberglass bow. We were little kids and we would see how far we could shoot an arrow. It’s always entertaining to me watching an arrow sail through the air.
I don’t know what happened to that bow. I’m guessing it might have had something to do with another thing we did. Shoot an arrow straight up and watch it disappear. I think mom may have made the bow disappear too. And unlike the arrow it didn’t reappear.
I’m not all that concerned about setting any records, but I do think it could be fun to get some of us together and shoot for the moon.
I understand though.

Don’t remember having it long but we sure had fun with it while it was around. I have often thought I would find it at my dad’s house but I haven’t. I can’t imagine my mom throwing it out. I did find an old compound that was my younger brothers.

Love the curves, antler tips, and the story. And yeah, those are some great looking garden beds and fruit trees, too. Still hoping our paths cross someday. :) T

Yes that would be cool. Bucket list for me one day soon. A few of us getting together could be really good or really bad idea depending on who you talk to. Hehehe. 😊

Yeah I would enjoy some friends and friendly competition. Maybe see if I could learn something.
I don’t know the rules good enough at this time. And how much you can push them.lol That always seems to be where the tension comes from.
I definitely wouldn’t be expecting to be winning anything, but it would be fun to see how this bow would do.

Looks great, Brian! Nice lines.

Great looking bow Brian. I don’t know if that’s the best looking bow you have ever made, but it sure looks good from what I can see. Hopefully it will put meat in the freezer this fall, and someday you’ll get to the Flats with it.

I agree Bentstick. I think I have made some prettier ones, but I think this one is right up there with the best shooting ones.

Nice bow! Arvin gave me one of those staves too. Would be great to see more flight shooters next weekend.
