First time posting here on PA, but have been reading and checking in as a guess for a while.
Thought this would be the place to get some opinions on this piece of wood. I have had this in my shop for about 5 years thinking is was osage, but my question is could it be black locust instead? I'll add acouple more pics.
Thanks David

Looks like Hedge...but them knots are throwing me for a loop!! The Knots look like Mulberry Limb Knots.......Too Yellow for B/Locust
-
Thanks. I have never worked locust before that I am aware of, unless this is locust ??
But a couple of things made me wonder...
I sprayed this with "oven cleaner" yesterday to darken it up some and after letting set for an hour plus I could not tell any difference in color.
Also the color just didn't seem to have that "neon osage yellow" as a freind put it like most of the osage I have worked with.
I have been shooting it some and have been happy with how it shoot' s so far.
Anyway I glued the takedown metal handle on the limbs yesterday. Just need to get a leather handle wrap on and get a finish on it.
Thanks for the replies. David

I'd say it's osage or very possibly mulberry. Some of the black locust around here is that yellow color, too. Those knots are funky. It would be a lot easier to identify for sure in person.
-
Lots of the locust around here is pretty yellow to a pale green color. Especially if it hasn't seen any weather after its been cut and split. But that really looks like osage to me.
-
I'd have to say osage too. Cool limbs. You gonna show us some pics of the completed bow? ;D Pat
-
Thanks again.
Pat, sure I'll post some pics when it is finished, but at the speed I normally complete a bow, if it is osage it may have that golden aged look to it by then. ::) :) :)

Who Cares?!?!?! ;) ....just kidding

That will look killer when you finish it out!

If you hit locust too hard with a heat gun it turns purple. Might test a piece that way.
-
I'd say it's osage. The early wood on Mullberry is usually a little darker than on osage.
How heavy is it? Osage and black locust are normally heavier than Mullberry.
-
Got some black locust and mulberry in my Dads yard that are yellow like that, but after they been cut a few days they change color...Thats most likely osage...Brian
-
I'd say Mulberry, especially with those funky looking, rotten knock holes.
-
Thats what I thought about the Knots too Eddie....but the Color is a little deceiving too!!
-
Looking at the knots and the way the back appears to look a little dirty, I would say mulberry also. Justin
