Title: Rawhide-backed Osage
Post by: Maxwelliuston on June 01, 2022, 11:11:06 am
Hi all - just finished this fella a couple days ago.  It was the first soft backing I've done and really the only recurve I've done that I've ended up liking.  Also pretty stoked to say that it was my first time seeking out a local osage tree and harvesting some staves for myself - they're not native where I live so I lucked out in finding someone who was ok with me nabbing one of their frontage trees.  The bow was built for a giant friend of mine so it had to pull 31".  Initially, I wasn't planning on recurves but I knew that draw length from 68" might get a little stacky so I decided to bend some in.  This was a real beast of a stave to convince to be straight and had plenty of character on the back that pushed my ring chasing abilities. Overall a really great build experience that resulted in something I'm really proud of

Its 68" ttt and 50# at 31"

Convex ring chasing is always a time consumer,or rather just having the right tool makes things easier.Good looking bow for your long armed fella.

That my friend is a sick bow! Beautiful recurves, tiller, and tips. Nailed it.

Real nice looking tiller on that one. Always hate to chase rings on a concave back but is sure is good looking when you get it done.

Thanks everyone! I normally don't prefer shooting a recurve but it's really growing on me as I put the reps in, I guess I can understand the appeal. It doesn't feel like the fastest shooter on the planet but I don't think it was ever going to be -rawhide backed, wide limbed, chunky tips. I already started work on a mølle from it's sister stave that is equally full of character
