I hadn't worked with hickory in some time, kinda got hooked on osage. Since I moved to nevada where the humidity is low I decided it would be a great place to work with the stuff. No need for a hot box, the shop keeps lumber at around 6%mc. While at Ojam I mentioned this to a good friend Tommy Leach, and he brings me this hickory stave the next day, what a guy. The bow is 60" 45# @ 26" 1 3/8" from fades to midlimb tapering to 1/2" tips. A very well mannered shooter. I used some short Texas Rat snakeskins I had, I kinda like the way they turned out. Bocote tips. Still hooked on osage ::) but I'm starting to like whitewoods more and more.

Thats a perty piece of white wood there Dano. I like the super short handle. Nice job!
-
Nice, I like the way the skins look. Good use of a small skin.
-
Another beauty Dano. I like the way you used those short snake skins.
Here is Dano and the beginning of this bow at OJAM. A lot of serious figurin' going on.

Mighty fine looking bow, Dano.

Beautifull bow, I love it! Im pretty partial to hickory saying as though thats all ive got to work with ;D
The one im working on right now is about the same dementions only the limbs are almost 2" wide for 2/3 of the length, then down to 1/2" nocks. i was kinda worried about the length but it looks like yours came out really well...gives me more confidence in mine! THANKS!

Well, finally get to see some of your work Dano, other than those beauties at OJAM last year ;D. That looks like a dandy! I don't recall seeing you post a bow since I've been visiting this sight - course my memory ain't what it used to be either ;D.
-
hey, looks real good. nice attention to detail- Ryan
-
Thanks ya'all. Paul, I haven't built a bow in over a year, juss gettin back in the swing of things.
-
Great lookin' hickory bow Dano. How did you do the transition where your snakeskin ends?I can't tell in the picture, but it looks mighty smooth. God Bless
-
Pete, the transition is pretty easy. The skins aren't too thick and a few coats of Tru Oil does just fine.
-
Pretty nice for an old retired far....guy! ;D You live in the perfect climate for hickory. I'm jealous...I love the stuff. By the time hunting season ends our climate gets perfect for hickory. >:(
You done good Dano. Thats a very nice bow with beautiful, unique skin application. Pat
-
Thanks Pat, I think ::) Don't be jealous I wish I could grow a beard ;D
-
I'll send some of mine! Pat

Nice bow Dano, I'm partial to white wood also seeing as how no yellow grows up here,
have some osage drying though. I like the tiller on your bow looks like its a spunky shooter :)
-
Nice bow Dano. I like to work with hick a much and your bow is a fine example of a good hickory bow.
-
Nothing against this work! Super job done!
-
Nice bow Dano! ;D
-
I kinda like the way it turned out too. Looks great. Gotta find me some short snakes ;D

Nice bow Dano. Real fine to see you building again. I expect out there in Nevada, you'd be lovin' a stick o' piss elm. For dry climate, it is pissa bow wood dawg. I may have enough to make a set of billets, which is good because I swore I'd never cut another. If you'll keep a lookout, you want winged elm, or get a piece from Marc St. Louis. I'm telling ya, if you try it you'll like it. Jus' one osage lover to another with the inside poop here, ya know.
-
Hi ya David!! Thanks, I have always taken your advice (well most always) ;D, I will give Elm a try.
-
Nice bow Dano. Good way to use short pieces of snakeskin. Looks really good
-
nice work man. i love how you guys do the handles. all of my bows are bend in the handle.
-
Very nice candidate for May Self Bow of the Month.
