Title: How do you prepare rawhide backing?
Post by: deerhunter97370 on May 13, 2008, 05:20:45 pm
I recieved so rawhide today from 3 Rivers Archery, and it is dry with hair and dirt on it. What do I do to get it ready to put on a bow. Thanks Joel

Is the hair still attached to it or just loose hair stuck on it? Usually all you need to do is soak it in some warm water and then squeeze it between a couple towels or something so that it's not sopping wet, then glue it down. Be sure to size the bow back with a good coat of glue.

The hair is loosely held on by the dirt on it. How long should I soek it? Joel

You will know when its ready. It gets pretty flimsy. You can wash the dirt and hair off and degrease the rawhide with dish detergent(Dawn especially)...and like Hillbilly said remove the excess moisture and size the rawhide and the bows back with glue.     Pat
