Title: Elm bow by old man
Post by: old man on August 04, 2021, 10:13:24 am
Here is the last bow I made, it's 63 1/2" overall and 62" NTN. It is elm with 3 1/2oz. of whitetail back sinew, applied with hide glue. After 4 weeks of curing, I applied 2 coats of TB 3 to the sinew for water proofing. It is braced to 6" and draws 70#@30", but most likely will only be drawn to around 28" (65#)the person it is for asked for 70#@30" draw. It has buffalo hide on the grip and whitetail antler for tip overlays. It is 1 7/8" at the widest place, 1 3/8" wide at mid limb and 9/16" wide at the tips. It is 1 1/8" thick 4" from center of bow 5/8" thick at mid limb and 1/2" thick at the tips (all thickness measurements are with sinew). The bow has 6 coats of tru oil and 6 coats of linseed oil and bees wax for finish, the belly was burnished, and the bow was rubbed down with 4/0 steel wool between each coat of tru oil. The upper limb has 3/8" positive tiller.

It sounds interesting Old Man. I’m guessing you have to resize your pictures to get them to post.

That's got some nice curves on it. Clean lines, well tillered.

A bit more bend mid to outers would've help the follow.
Stout bow tho and 30" for a  62 ntn bow is pushing it a bit!

That looks and sounds like a serious hunting bow...I like everything about it...My American Elm is as tough as they come with interlocking grain and a few layers of sinew it should be bullet proof...Nice balanced bend on the tree, how's she look and feel in the hand?

I heat bent 1 1/2" deflex and 1 1/2" reflex into the bow and lost only 1/2" of reflex, the bow grip is nice with the unsplit buffalo hide, it gives a little padding. The bow is a good bit heaver than the ERC bows that I normally make. It is also a bear for me to string, I built it for my son who is 6' 2" and 250#. The elm is the toughest wood I have ever seen, I believe you could pull this bow to 32" with no problem.

Thanks Don, I made a lot of mistakes early in my bow making experience, but not as many any more, I broke my first 22 bow's. Most of it was poor design, trying to make bows to short for poundage and draw length. I destroyed some nice ERC staves along with red oak, black locust and white oak

I hope You and your Son will take the time to post a full draw for us...That looks like a heavy hitter!  (SH)

Beautiful bow. My favorite bow is made from elm. I have a soft spot for the wood.
