Title: #4: Rawhide-backed hickory sudbury
Post by: WhistlingBadger on July 19, 2021, 11:24:47 am
I just finished this one and thought I'd share.  This is the first bow I've made that I actually like.  :)  Shoots like a dream:  Flat and fast, no discernable hand-shock, hits where I'm looking.

Rawhide-backed hickory (thanks Allyn).  Sudbury-ish profile.  Draws 44# @ 27".  Slightly trapped back.  Elk antler tip overlays and inlaid antler arrow pass.  Stained with minwax wood finish, golden oak on rawhide back and ebony on belly and sides.  Celtic knotwork done in acrylic paint.  Finished with two coats of paste wax.  Cowhide grip tied on with artificial sinew.

Tiller still looks slightly weird at full draw, but it shoots great so good enough.

great looking bow with lots of attention to detail, like the tips and art work... I also like seeing the "Sudbury-ish profile." as I have always liked the look of the wide mid limbed bows...like paddle-bows...   :OK

Nice work.  I think FD profile looks pretty darn sweet myself.

Nice!  It looks like a good shooter.  That curvy profile is pretty sweet.

Looks good!  :)

Tell us more about that quiver, I noticed you are wearing it reverse the way I would.

Thanks, all.  I'm pretty happy with it.  I should mention, since there's another thread going about it, that I trapped the back a little bit.  I did it mostly because my rawhide was just a little narrow, but it doesn't seem to have hurt the performance.

Looks good!  :)

The quiver is made from veg tanned hide of my first archery deer, trimmed with badger fur.  You can see more of it here.  http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,68687.msg963985.html#msg963985  I'm working on a write-up for the magazine, if I ever get around to finishing it.  Yeah, I wear it backward so it doesn't snag on brush when I'm sneaking up on something.

Nice work.  I think FD profile looks pretty darn sweet myself.
I appreciate that.  I wish it bent a little more out of the upper fade, but sometimes I see stuff that isn't there.  ha ha  Either way, it was shooting so smooth and fast, I decided not to mess with it anymore.

That’s a great looking bow. I really like the profile and the knotwork. Hickory is great bow wood. Looks like it wants to hunt!

I remember seeing that now.

Your first primitive kill was two years ago?  I thought you were still new to this whole thing!

I love that bow. Its simple, but it has elegant markings to make it special. And the handle is fit and tied very well. Congratulations WhistlingBadger, that is a work of art. You should be proud of it.

Nice looking bow with the artwork. :)
Well done :)
If you wanted a little critique on the tiller it should bend a little more mid limb out, a wee bit less inner limbs. You may start seeing a little set in those inner limbs over time.

Thanks, everybody.  I appreciate the feedback.

Well, not new to hunting, but definitely new to making bows.  And that deer was my first and so far only primitive kill (I didn't get to hunt last year for family reasons).  So yeah, I'm a grown-up human but still a baby primitive archer.  :)

Nice looking bow with the artwork. :)
Well done :)

Thanks!  I very much want critique on the tillering.  I see the upper, inner limb too stiff, so I'm not seeing the same thing that you are.  Just takes time and experience, I guess?  I wanted to keep the tips a bit stiff; that's good, right?
