Title: Tree Id...any guesses?
Post by: Jakesnyder on June 30, 2021, 04:54:47 pm
Can't find any apps that are very accurate to I'd trees. I live in the north east.

Maybe black gum, Nissa sylvatica.

I tried to use my tree id book but it needs flowers or fruit to really get it down. I have a Missouri tree book that is more useful but that might not help

Are the leaves arranged on the stem opposite of each other? Or are they alternate?

Boom, they look alternate in Allyn's pics.

I’m with Pat, I’m coming up with black gum.

If it is black gum it is difficult to split similar to elm with interlocking fibers.

some plant ID books use "keys", a way of narrowing down the different characteristics.     winter and summer keys. dunno about apps

there should be more comprehensive keys around specific for your area

So the “PictureThis” app ids the back photo as black ash and the leaves picture as black gum.

Every blurry thing I can see looks like black gum is a great guess, but what is that leaf on the right with a large sinus? It looks like a mulberry leaf. The only things we have here that have a variable number of lobes like that are sassafras and mulberry.
If that is in fact on the same stick that is in your hand then it changes my guess dramatically unless it has some sort of scarring to explain the leaf shape. Are the leaves waxy?
If you're thinking of removing it and can reach a branch to get a good look at the endgrain on a smooth cut of a couple inches in diameter or so, the ID gets easier.
High picture quality helps so much.

I've never had fun with dichotomous keys if I could just get someone to give me positive ID real quick.

The apps aren't there yet. They hit sometimes, but I've seen some silly results, too.

Black ash doesn’t have the furrowed bark. I’m not too familiar with black gum but from what I can see from the pictures and my books, I agree.

I agree with Pat B. I just cut one similar to this in northern PA and it was black gum or black Tupelo.

Contact the county/state forester!  Tree I'd is what they get paid for!
