I just collected and filtered almost 6 oz of spruce gum today.  I am trying to figure out how to capture and condense the vapors from the process.  They are very flammable and may be useful.  I poured some of the hot resin into the snow to see what would happen.
I'm not sure what I'll do with it all, but make hay while the sun shines!

Looks good, make glue is what I do with it, it don't go bad so I make up a bunch at a time, give some away and put some up for later projects. :)

Trying to collect the vapors might be a tad bit dangerous! Things that "flam" can also go boom!, and that ain't good!  Cook them outside or with a vent fan going!  Nice chunk of pitch, though.  Snow sculpture. (S) )P(

I cook the stuff over a campfire.  I may bring a hotplate outside and see how that works.  Without an ignition source I might be able to avoid burning the stuff every time.  As far am the turpentine goes, I'm picturing something like an old fashioned moonshine still, but maybe less outlawish looking. :)

If you want to use it for glue you musn't let it get too hot eg. bubbling. It makes weak brittle glue if it gets too hot.
