Title: Just finished...
Post by: Okie on May 06, 2008, 12:50:25 am
My first Red Oak board bow. And to think I cut my teeth on Osage. This was definitely fun making this though. You "Masters of these Bows" please comment on this one especially the grain. This was my first time picking out a board from Lowe's and I wasn't sure if this was good enough but it was the best I could find in a 1x2. The tips are deer antler. I haven't decided what color leather to use on the handle yet, I'm thinking a dark brown, what do you guys think would go good on this bow. It is 60# @ 28 and really flings an arra. It has about 1-1/2 inches of string follow but doesn't seem to hurt the performance. Is 1-1/2 " string follow in this type bow acceptable? This was made for my brother in law in an attempt to convert him. Hope you enjoy, my pictures aren't the best.

It looks like it's bending pretty far, how long is it?
Good job on that bow, you should be proud!

Hey John , It looks great to me, I'd go for the dark brown handle. Are you gonna do a wrapped handle or stitched?

Donnie, I'll probably just stitch it, that wrapped handle was a b***** to get right. You got to come down and build a bow with me. Bring your son and we'll build 4. ;D

Yes the right limb is the bottom. I left it a tad stiff because I got skeered I was going to lose to much weight if I took it down anymore and I really wanted a 60#er.

Looks good to me and the grain must be straight if its holding together at 60#@28" and 1.5" of string follow is
pretty darn good if you didn't heat induce some backset. Well done eh.
