Title: Matching His/Hers Oak Selfbows
Post by: organic_archer on December 13, 2020, 12:40:48 pm
Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend! I don't make many bows out of oak these days, but I got a special request from a customer for matching his/hers oak selfbows and just happened to have a few staves on hand. The oak tree has sentimental value in their relationship. They came from sister staves inside the same Red Oak tree that was cut in Kentucky and gifted to me by my brother. These shipped off to the UK last week!

Red Oak Selfbow
53# at 29"
68" length
Bison hide grip
D97 Flemish w/ B50 padded loops

Red Oak Selfbow
37# at 24"
64" length
Bison hide grip
D97 Flemish w/ B50 padded loops

The 37# bow has the "elhaz" or "algiz" rune burned into the lower limb with a hot iron, per request. This ancient rune symbolizes protection, a shield against evil, connection to the Gods, and enlightenment/higher life. She ordered 60 arrows total, 30 for each bow. All 60 have target points. I went with a his/hers cut on the feathers so they're easy to tell apart and so there'll be no doubt who's the better shot!

Surewood Doug Fir shafts
11/32 diameter
Wild goose feathers
Self nocks
Artificial sinew binding

I lost the full draw photos when I accidentally shot my camera last week after getting a little to generous with the tripod while filming for the gram. It was a heart shot and they couldn't recover any of the photos lol. I'll make it up to you guys next time!

Very cool. Don’t see many oak stave bows. I like the set. Good to see you on PA after following on Instagram for a while.

Wow, that sounds like a first. I couldn't do that if I tried.

I hope it wasn't to bad of a loss.

Are those goose feathers on the arrows?
