Hey people I am new to flint knapping and I live in Alabama.My question is can you knap chert???

90% of knapping material is chert of one sort or another. All chert isn't created equal, though-some knaps really good raw, some needs heat, and some is too fractured up and hackly to use. What kind you got? That Alabama Fort Payne chert is good stuff.

COOL,I live bot 30 miles away from Ft.Payne.I live in Jackson County.

Ft. Payne chert comes from outcrops in the Fort Payne Mississippian limestone formation which runs from Alabama up through Tennessee into Kentucky. Some of it is excellent material.
