Hello,
I have a decent looking piece of ipe that I was going to add a hickory backing to for a flatbow design. Then I found this bug hole (see photo). It is a little over 1/32" wide, and about 1/2" deep. The ipe board is 3/4" thick and 1.5" wide.
What is my best option here? I would think putting it on the belly would be the best, but wanted to get your thoughts.

Whittle a thin dowel from a scrap of ipe, and glue it in with a slow set epoxy, or urac. Flush it off with a chisel and back it with hickory

So you suggest putting it on the back, rather than on the belly where a lot of it will be tillered off? What the thinking behind that?

With his suggestion he is making a solid repair on the bug hole, and then covering with Hickory which should work just fine. I have made a lot of successful repairs on the belly of bows with crazy glue ,and in your case Ipe saw dust. I fill the hole up with red bottled super glue ,and pack the hole tight as you go ,and add a little glue . Pack it past flush,and then sand down. Either way it should be fine.JMO
