Title: Pushing sugar maple?
Post by: Jakesnyder on May 19, 2020, 08:30:28 am
I have seen a few sugar maple bows on here but not many. How far can it be pushed? Is it as tension strong as hickory? Thanks

With a wide belly pretty far.  As a backing it is not quite as strong but it's easily strong enough to back even Ipe.

Some prefer Maple over Hickory as a backing since it often seems to be of better quality as a lumber wood, likely due to how it's handled after cutting.   You'll hear of "bad" batches of Hickory that fail more readily than the actual strength numbers would suggest.

Can maple self bow handle the same dimensions as say another white wood? Anyone have experience sinew backing it?
