Working on a short wide and narrow one and wondering how thin is too thin to heat tempert? Usually I get my bows tillered to brace or about half of the draw length before I heat treat. This one is probably around 3/8” or less thick in most spots. My thought is I would just have the heat gun closer to the surface so the heat doesn’t penetrate as much and it doesn’t take as long to get dark. Thoughts?

Yup, the big problem is how much closer. :D

I usually work about 2" above the limb with the heat gun and work a 6" section then move on to the next 6" and so on. I think you could work it like that until you get a color change without adversely affecting through the limb.
