On a pyramid bow I know thickness should be pretty uniform but do you still leave the tips thicker for the last few inches?

I do, the last 6 inches stiff make it faster in my opinion.

You don't have to really leave them thicker to get stiff tips. To get a true circular tiller the bow should taper to a point at the nocks. Since that is not possible the extra width you need to have a nock also acts to stiffen the tips up.
