Spent a couple of hours this afternoon hollowing out an apple branch for a new sheath to replace the nasty plastic one one on my 'shop knife. I'll glue it up overnight and then carve it into something pretty over the next few days. Not sure what style I am aiming for at the moment, maybe ainu makiri as I like the belt toggle idea. Anyone like to post some pictures/links to any wooden knife sheath carvings? Oh, yes, I did have a reversal issue early on, managed to spot it in time :-[

Looks like a neat project! I may try one from cherry or crabapple, but not sure I have any ca in the freezer. But it will be back burner to getting moved. And staying healthy!

the hole for belt attachment looks a little bit fragile :-T
-
Yes it does, but as it is illegal to carry a fixed blade in the UK its a hanging strap for a cleat above my work bench rather than a belt strap. It is a bit delicate, though the bridge is 3mm wide it should be OK. If it fails I'll splice in a patch and try something else.

V-tool outlining is done and a string groove carved in.(https://stuckinthemudsite.files.wordpress.com/2020/04/20200416_1425498868752110747336777.jpg)

That is extremely cool, Stick! I like the design, and I like the decorative carving. You have me thinking about future projects...
-
Nice carving work! Are you going to use colors on the grooves?

Thankyou. No, the grooves separate the leaves from the background, allowing me to carve the background away without damaging the foreground. I'll carve the grooves twice to get the depth I need then carve away the rest. I'll post a picture tomorrow

This is turning out real nice. Great work, will keep on following along
Thanks Leroy
-
Wow. That's going to be beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration.

Got the roughing out all finished, reference lines are all marked up. Next bit will take maybe 20 hours., haven't done fish scale checkering for about 3 years, wish me luck!

That's coming out for you really nice.Lot of time and lots of intricate detail.I should get me some intricate wood carving tools myself sometime. Will you have different colors on it when finished?
I made a sheath out of wood for a large knife once.I decorated it some also.I put brain tan on it and beaded it.Very safe type of sheath to use also.
-
Last time I did this I used colour, time before that I just darkened the background. The grain is all a bit bland so I'll do something, just not decided on what yet.
-
AHA! Bas (raised) relief? (I hope) excellent idea! I may have my terms mixed up, though!

whoa, well done sir. John

Kinda put this bit off but spent a few hours with a 5mm No7 and a 3mm No 3 (i think) and printed in the scales on one side. Will try and resist the temptation to hollow them until I've done the same to the other side(https://stuckinthemudsite.files.wordpress.com/2020/04/20200425_1158531119804739402542426.jpg)

I made a wood sheath one time in the NW Coastal style. The sheath is carved with teeth and a tongue, but a lot of it is obscured with the bear hide backing.

Wow knocker that's fantastic, thanks for sharing! Here's where I am after about 20 hours, couple more hours left detailing but the fish scale is nearly done. Next is 3 or 4 hours on the leaves, but the end is on sight. (https://stuckinthemudsite.files.wordpress.com/2020/05/20200510_1209421402379873366483634.jpg)

Very nice wooden sheath and carving. 8) :OK
-
Beautiful Work
-
You do beautiful work but isn't it rather fragile being wood and that thin? I would think it would crack if you looked at it the wrong way.
-
Well, you'd think so wouldn't you but I've dropped it a half a dozen times and so far so good. Only the handle end is thin, wirh a thickness of 2mm but it very rapidly thickens up, its over 5mm thick within a half inch
-
OK then :D Carry on ;D ;D
-
Nice work!
Shouldn't the loop be closer to mouth of sheath?
-
Yes it should, its right at the balance point so I got away with it otherwise I would have had to extend the loop opening towards the mouth.
-
Beautiful work, got to love that. :)

gorgeous :OK :OK :OK
obviously you gonna carve the knife handle too )-w(
-
Wasnt planning on carving the handle, but it is a possibility

Had a pretty awful glueline, don't know why so I soaked the thing apart, cleaned everything up, checked for a tight fit, all looking really good, glued it together, glue line still nearly as bad. Had to glue in some splines. Cannot work out what's going on unless the one side warped as the stress came out when I split the timber. Cost me 10 days to soak it, dry it, glue it and spline it. Back on track, carving nearly done. Maybe two or three hours before sealing and painting.

Very nice stuckinthemud.I like it.
Would a sinew wrap at the top make it any stouter?
-
There is a channel let in for a wrap of some sort, sinew would work really well and is not something I had thought to use until you mentioned it. I was toying with a fancy linen plait of some sort
-
Lovely work :)
-
Really beautiful. Those leaves give a really good 3d effect. T
-
Staining is done, glue line pretty much disappeared.

Spent a big chunk of the weekend carving an ojime (bead) from an antler tip with bamboo insert. Also dug out a netsuke I carved while exam invigilating one summer several years ago that sat in a box ever since. Just got to twist a fancy string and we're all done.
