So I chased a ring on a billet for this weekend and I came across this. It doesn’t seem to be a ring violation, just discoloration or something or weird grain. What do you think.
-
Could you have gone through a ring in that spot? It could be just an odd discoloration. Is the wood sound there or weak(put a finger nail into it)?
-
I dont know i dont have long nails. bad habit. i scraped down farther (probably shouldnt have) but I did and i didnt violate the ring. it dosen't seem to be softer or anything
-
I have a few bows with those "bruises". I'm not sure what causes them. Can you feel it at all?
-
no i dont feel any difference in it.
-
Hit it with a few strokes from a scraper and see if the shape changes at all.
-
yeah i did scrape it. it got the tiniest bit bigger then stopped. not alot of change
-
Well, you better go down another ring if you have enough depth to do so.
-
I dont have a lot of wood. this was on the ring before too.
-
Is there any sign of it on the belly? I'm wondering if it's just a sign of something further in. Going down another ring may show something.
-
no sign on the belly

i have maybe a half an inch in thickness on this billet, im realy worried about going another ring down
-
the third picture was just of it wet so i could see it better. i removed it.
