This is the second guava stave I got from Manny a while back. The first is real snaky so I'm saving it for later. ;D
She is 64"t/t, 58#@28", 1 1/2" at the fades, 1 3/8" at mid limb and 5/8" tips(a bit too big). The copperhead skins came from small snakes I killed in my front yard. They were too short for complete limb coverage so I went as far as they would go and wrapped the ends with string serving material. The tip overlays are zebra wood cut and glued back together to form a chevron design and cow horn on the very tips. The handle wrap in hemp twine set in Massey finish and Ferrets floppy rest at the arrow pass. I've got about 6 coats of Tru-Oil and the pen work was done with a bamboo quill type pen I made and India ink.
She shoots quite well. If I would reduce the tips more, she would be a bit faster and with less shock, although there isn't much now. Enjoy, Pat
ps, I'll post full draw and braced pics soon

Sweet lookin bow Pat, nice use of them rascally copperhead skins.
-
Looks great Pat ! I really like the tips :)
-
Thanks guys. Yea Dano it is getting to be copperhead time of year again. My dogs point them out to me. Both have been hit 2 or 3 times :o...some hot and some not. Generally I beat the snakes so bad there is not much left for even arrow cresting. ;D
John, I'll try to post better pics of the tips I am proud of the way they look, myself. Pat
-
very nice looking bow, pat, but why did you tiller her to 28"? >:D i do like the tips with that chevron design. that zebrawood came out purdy
-
Very nice Pat, I like the cooperhead skins. Hopfully I'll have enough to cover one of my in a couple months.
John
-
very cool. ;)

I was wondering when those guava staves that Manny has been sending out were going to start popping up. It looks like Pat has set a high bar for the rest of us.
-
Absolutely stunning Pat ;) That is one very fine bow. The skins, tips, and thread wraps along with the beautiful handle wrap bring the package all together. Congratulations ;) Keenan
-
WOW, that is GORGEOUS! Really and truly...I think I like what you did better than if you'd had bigger copperhead skins. What a great looking bow.
-
Thanks everyone. I'm not real pleased with the tiller now that I see it on the screen. That can be fixed later. Here are the braced and full draw pics and a few close ups of the top and bottom tips. Pat

Again that is an awesome bow Pat. ;D Those tips are a perfect match, and the braced pic actually looks like it has a slight gull wing profile. ;) Keenan
-
very Cool bow Pat I love those tips also
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;Dnice Pat,...yeah I've learned with Guava that when I think the outher limb is narrow enought, to go a bit more narrow ;) ;),
-
I still think it's gotta smart when your beard gets caught in the string :o
That is some fine work there Pat.
-
Glad to see you finally finish one Pat. Its been a while since you posted anything...... ;D Nice job. The bottum limb looks a little weaker than the top to me at full draw, but other than that she looks pretty darn good. How did you like the guava ?
-
I like the string keeper. The bow is pretty nice too. ;D Justin
-
Pat,I like it ;D Tips look great, don't see that style every day...

Great looking bow!
Those are some labor-intensive tips!
Wonderful idea for the short snakes. Now I won't feel so bad killing those 24" copperheads. >:D
Not that I felt TOO bad.
-
thats a sweet bow! ;D i love that. i especially love those tips.
-
Thanks everyone. It has been a while since I posted any bows but hopefully the dry spell is over.
I've been playing with this type of tips lately. I got the idea from Mike Treadway, a bowyer from Marshall, NC.Mike built my glass longbow. On my bow Mike put a small flat piece of horn to protect the very tip of the bottom limb. Well, like a grisly piece of meat, it grew the more I chewed on the idea. I now add a brass pin inserted through the tip piece down into the limb tip. I had a few pop off before, but not now. Maybe I'll do a build along. ;)
Ryan, I can see the lower limb being weaker and Yankee's oval proves it. ;) It is good getting back in the swing.
Yankee, I'm only trying to shake the rust loose after not seeing my work for a while. You don't have to loose any sleep worrying about me becoming a "Tiller Fanatic". I'm far from that. ;D
The guava worked like hickory but denser. This stuff is heavy. Finished bow feels twice the physical weight of a similar HHB I've recently finished.(Steve, I promise I will weigh it for you ;D)
Dano, I haven't had that problem since compound days. I wrote a limerick about it in the "limerick thread" Hillbilly started.
Manny, Thanks for the opportunity to work this great bow wood. The wood is beautiful also. It is a shame to cover its beauty.
I will reduce the tips but later! ;) The other snaky stave will be another story. 8)
OK, I know there are a bunch of GUAVA staves out there. Lets see some bows. I know for a fact that the wood is dry enough to work! ;) Pat

Super bow as usual Pat, I cant see any thing wrong with the tiller. Anxious to see it in Tenn. in a few days. Am bringing my snakey guava stave to try and get a bow out of it, should be lots of expert help and advice. Don't envy you with those slithery snakes in your yard. Kenneth
-
I had a few pop off before, but not now.
Pat I used to experience that problem occasionally until I figured out what I was doing wrong. If the tips flex even a little bit and your overlays are not gradually feathered into the limb, they can come off. I broke one bow that way and came close on a couple of others. Now I keep my tips stiff and really feather the overlays and have not had a problem since.
-
hey pat! - i love this bow! really nice tip idea!!!
frank
-
Nice bow Pat. I think the tiller looks off because the top limb is a bit stiffer than the lower just past mid limb
-
Very nice bow Pat,love the copper heads,to bad they hardly ever grow very long around here.
Tip look great also very well done.Hope to see it up close at the Classic. It dose form the only
one I worked on [,the comunity bow] work a lot like Hickory.Good wood and seem pretty tough. :)
Pappy
-
Pat with a tiller like that I'm sure that you will be embarassed to be seen at Pappy's with it,
so ya better just give it to the Yooper to look after ;D
Looks good Pat, the skins are sweet and the tips are a bit different. Nice.
-
Great looking bow, Pat. At least you finally got one posted, I haven't had a chance to work on any much lately. I've got half-a-dozen half finished bows sitting around. Looking forward to seeing that one in person next week.
-
That's a real beauty Pat! I really like the artistic detail you put in the bow...especially the tips. This one has some cool idea's that I'll make note of for future bows! Tiller looks good to me...look forward to seeing it in a week or so! ;)
-
Gordon, It is not the overlays that come off but the horn on the very end of the tips. They are glued flat to the end and the bottom one will come loose if the bottom limb hits the ground. By adding a pin through it , it secures it in place so it doesn't come loose.
Marc, I can see the outer limb on the top limb is quite stiff. The bottom is a bit stiff too byt not as much.
This bow will be coming to the Classic next week. She is as excited as I am. ;D
Greg, I'm sure I have borrowed some of your ideas so feel free.
Pappy, we very rarely see larger copper heads around here. The little ones seem more apt to strike. Just ask my dogs! :o
Thanks everyone. Pat
-
Awesome bow, Pat. Love it! Jawge
-
Great looking bow Pat! I love those copperhaed skins.
Alan
-
You did yourself and the Guava proud, Pat.
-
Ahh, I understand now. Thank you for the clarification.
-
Pat: You just don't make any ugly one's ;D. Man, that is nice - I really like that chevron look of the tips. More idea's if I ever get time :'(.
-
Hi Pat,
that's a fine looking bow. Love the details you did on the bow.
-
Good lookin' bow, Pat. I really like the tip overlays.
-
So Pat, did you tiller that thing out without a scale? Just draw it to a comfortable weight, like you said in my thread on scales?
-
Radius, I do that with most bows. I make most for myself so I go to where it is comfortable for me and they usually come out between 50# and 55#@26"(my draw length) but I always tiller to 28" in case I sell or give one away to someone. I do have a scale but usually only use it to get an idea of weight early on but then not until I'm ready to write it on the bow.
I think I will try to do a build along on the tips...but not til after the Classic.
Thanks everyone. I have another bow I made for a raffle at the Classic. If I have time I will post it...and cowboy it ain't as pretty as this one...but just as functional! ;D Pat
-
Cool bow Pat, I really like what you did with those tips.
