I'm working on a plum stave and looking for some suggestions on bow dimensions for 45-50 lb at 26".
-
Hey Clint. Can’t help ya but I am interested in the answer my own self. I cut two staves about 3 years ago and both cracked horribly. One was unusable. The other is not as bad and I might can salvage something out of it. Mine were native Plums. Most every one I have seen have been from Purple Leaf or other landscape type trees. Interested in the feed back.

I know Upstate did one awhile ago. He really liked it. I know Marc. has done a few. I'll be watching. (-P

Howdy Clint. Plum's an awesome bow wood. How long is your stave? If you're planning on 52" of working limb to accommodate the 26" of draw I'd go around 1.25" to 1.5" wide and a little over .5" thick out of the fades. Plum likes a bit of a toasted belly too. (=)
Best of luck and keep us posted. (-P

Gotten your draw out to 26"??!

The stave is plenty long. I'll have to trim it down several inches. Its clean and has a perfect amount of natural reflex. If the bow shop calms down tonight I'll rough it out.

I have one Marc made,, its about that draw and weight,,its about 60 nock to nock,, and about 1 3/8 at widest,,slightly bend in handle,,handle is narrowed a bit,,1 1/4
I think I remember him telling me he did not heat it,,

I’ve made a couple plum sapling bows and I was really impressed with the wood. I’m stoked to get into some of the bigger pieces, because it really seems like a top shelf wood like everyone always says it is. The stuff I’ve used is a fruiting variety that the birds have spread around here, but I have some purple leaf non fruiting staves as well, not sure if there’s any difference.

Wow, that's straighter than some of my arrows!

Yep. I’ll be watching to see what you do with this one.

Excited to watch this one, I have a few plum branches drying at the moment as well.

If there was a drooling emoji I'd use that, but I guess this one will suffice...

That is about the nicest plum stave I have ever seen. i have made quite a few in the 50# class from staves just barely 1" wide and 60" long. They don't seem to take much set and they never break. I consider plum the ultimate bow wood.

That is a beauty and there's no cracks in it :o Are you sure it's plum ;D ;D ;D ;D
