Three days ago I made bow rack from Maple from an old bed. I stained it with Watco Black Walnut stain. I let it dry for most of the day and then coated it with gloss Varathane. It is still tacky. Yesterday my wife coated a window frame with the same can of Varathane. This morning it's dry. The only thing I can see is that I didn't let the stain dry long enough before I Varathaned. Anyway, is there anything I can do to get it dry other than wait. I've had it sitting in front of the stove for two days.

Short of sanding it off I don't know. Just a guess though.
-
Not familiar with the Watco stains, but if they are oil based, you could have a problem. I think the oil based stains have to be thoroughly dry before sealing.

It was sitting in front of the stove and I remembered that the stove has a fan. We leave it off cause it's noisy. I turned it on and the extra air movement dried it enough in a couple of hours to hang it up. Thirty-six bows on this one and there's another down the hall with twenty on it. This is silly :D

You need more friends! ;)

...and how long have you been building bows? :o :OK

I find that...impressive as all get out.

You exceed having a Bow for each day of the month! And I thought 5 was a lot, even though I only made one of them! :BB >:D (lol). Nice collection!

I knew that everyone was a beginner once but seeing someone giving me advice, and then seeing them as a beginner! wow! that makes me want to make more bows! Im off! :BB :BB :BB

How old is the stain. I have 7 bows and having a couple more would be plenty for me.....Yikes. ::)
-
Very old. I bought it when I built the house in 1977. You think that may have something to do with it ;D ;D ;D
-
Petroleum distillate products goes off after a while, paints, stains, varnishes, shellac etc.. . My lawn mower gas went stinky after one year.
-
'1977! That's only 40 years! I think you need new stain! >:D

I used the same stain and Varathane on the living room windows returns at the same time and it worked fine. The only difference was leaving the stain dry overnight on the returns. I think it was that "following instructions" thing that haunts us so often ;D ;D
-
Yep! When all else fails, read and follow the instructions! >:D (lol). Been there, done that! And I think we all have. Keep the can tightly sealed, too.
