Hi
I would like to Make a composite horse bow like a SALUKI or Attila or similar -
Glass
laminations
glass
+ Siyahs
Maybe approx 54" long -
35-50lbs
i draw approx 30" but not super important as I am more interested in making
Glass i have is 1mm x 38mm - so will use this
Just making for Fun - have made recurves before and also Bamboo Horsebow
so just need some approx dimensions.
how many laminations - whats a good width or thickness for the bow/laminations and are the laminations Tapered like in recurves and laminated longbows ?
any info helpful or a link anyone hads found for a build along ..
Thanks Mark

That IS something we do here actually

HI Guys
SORRY SORRY - i really didn't know , I usually Make all wood / Bamboo things , only made one Glass bow before so more of a experiment ,
I would love to make it in Sinew and Horn , both hard to get in the UK and bit pricy so though would make a glass one first and then onto the Horn and Sinew one after .
Is it better I delete this post ?
Thanks Mark
-
Yes
-
No harm no foul. But it is better to delete it, so others who search for glass on the internet wont see our forum come up, become confused, and ask more glass questions.
-
That was a badger type reply. ;)

the building principles are pretty much the same whatever materiel you use, and you can learn more about those principles here at PA than anywhere else. :)

Glass is a pain to work with, all that dust gets into your power tools, clothes, work area and your Lungs..!! not a healthy option >:( Stick with wood it makes for a much smoother bow.
-
globalmark,
You can use all the plastic, epoxy, metal screws and phenolic you want, and even the kitchen sink...But no glass, ya see, we are primitive here...LOL....................................................................I see the term "all wood bows" used pretty loosely around here at times....I never could see the separation from glass to primitive here...But, rules are rules....Bingham Projects may help you...They helped me out a lot, years ago...

Sorry, the only glass we talk about here is the stuff in the knapping section.

I have heard some guys drink beer out of glass,, (-S

The real men of us drink from a horn!

Mark,
Looking good...Make sure you are using a respirator, I remember the days of a drum sander and a glass layout...You are bringing up past memories...Here's a few pics of the only recurve I have left...This was a Bingham project and I used Curly Maple on the riser and limbs...

They beat you up on Tradgang just the same as here because you cut a shelf in YOUR bow. I wish people would stop all the nit picking. Its one reason I rarely contribute to bow building sites anymore. I understand separating glass bows from wood bows on this site. But then somebody always wants to further separate wood bows into four more categories to suit their own views. I think you made a fine bow and I hope you enjoy it. That is why you made it.

Hi Pearl Drums
Thanks for those kind words - i have thick skin so dont mind what people say - and like cooking i never follow a recipe anyway do what i feel is right -
Horse bows dont have Glass anyway so a shelf really dont make a difference Hahaha -
I agree you can always separate into more categories ..
I enjoy making things more then shooting Bows so for me that's the enjoyment ..
Thanks again

Im looking fwd to seeing it strung and finished!

Nice looking bow Mark. Let us know how she shoots.

Real glass came along not too long after real wood bows, or so! Health warning!! It is much safer to remove the horn from the critter before attempting to drink from the horn - the critter may strenuously object!! Hope the bow shoots well! See my reply to Irishjay's post. I am trying to find a good drinking horn at the same time I have money/trade goods to acquire it! >:D (lol)

Maitus, if it is to be center fire, by all means stay below about 40 grains or so depending on load data! If it is a muzzleloader, you can go up to about 150 gr 2Fg with a round ball, in a .58 caliber-however, expect a rather severe kick to your shoulder. That was Mario Medina's favorite load from his .58 cal. Hawken rifle. Btw, (war story) (grain of salt required) a couple guys told me they would reload 7.62x39mm ammo with C4 explosive and leave it for bait for the Veit Cong. Never heard about any test results, though! >:D

That bow looks good to me. And for what it's worth, James Parker makes a hybrid horse bow for people that can't afford a real one. He uses glass in place of sinew and horn on the belly. They shoot great, I have one.

I have heard of stuff like that before. Its probably true. Cyanide laced wine being left comes to mind as well.
