Title: not felling a tree

Has anyone tried harvesting a stave from a tree without felling it? Like is described in TBBI p173.
What tools did/would you use? And did/would you leave the stave in the tree for drying or harvest it green?

I've never done it but I would use a saw to cut a wedge from the top and bottom of the stave and wedges to remove the stave.
Leaving it on the tree would probably season without much checking but would take at least a year or possibly longer to season where as splitting it out green you'd treat it just like any other stave.
 I personally wouldn't do it for the health of the tree.

I would use a lot wedges and I guess it is not easy to split it out.
Many trees heal themselves quiet fast but you can help them by sealing the wound with resin.
This can prevent invading fungi and other bad.

Another way not felling a tree - maybe just a branch?
I also visited a place where a strong wind cracked big slowly grown beeches...I found some trunks completly splitted. I chopped of a nice big splinter and will give it a try soon
