This one was to try and see if I could get an Ocean Spray selfbow into the 180-190fps range. It's 64.5" NTN 43#@28". Water Buff tips. I used a new method of deflexing and it worked but the glue line sucked so I put a leather handle on it. Accented the ends with upholstery thread. Couple of coats of tung oil. It managed 181 fps so I'm pretty happy.

Very nice OS bow!
-
Yes DC, I'd be pretty happy with that one as well. :OK
Love that kink in the handle!
-
Thanks guys. That's a standard OS lump. They tend to overdo the wood growth around a knot.
-
DC,
Nice work on that OS...Great bend, it should hold it's profile a long, long time...

Very cool shape and method. What grain arrow?

400

Very nice bow Don. I good to see the hole saw trick worked. Is that a chunk of yew in the handle? Cheers- Brendan

You are making some killer bows with some excellent speeds Don! This bow so much reminds me of an Egyptian angular bow in its profiles. Very cool results
-
Nice bow. That's an interesting way of deflexing. I'm assuming that the wood does well heat-treated.
-
Cool shape! This bow even looks like a real shooter! :D
Well done!

nice bow Don! What glue you using in the handle? I think I remember you saying OS doesn't like to have handles glued?
Cheers,

Marc-The deflex method was just a try to see if it might be easier/neater but I just don't have the talent to get a nice glue line on something like that. It also doesn't allow a precise way of adjusting the deflex. After I glued that chunk in I flattened it out and that left a surface that I couldn't reach with the belt sander. It was smooth but wavy. I cut a bunch of pieces of Maple .030 thou veneer and layered it on with epoxy. About 15 layers i think. Wrapped it up with a bike tube. I actually turned out nice. Glue joints were nice and tight and where I sanded across it in the fades it had a nice Osagey look. Yes, OS likes heat treating even though it is very dense, SG-1.2.
240- You made me think, that 400 grain arrow was too light, it pulls 43#, I should have used a 430 grain arrow. I guess the speed should be a little less, darn.
Brendan- It's a piece of OS. I think the piece had a shellacked back so it looks like yew heartwood.
George-I used West Systems Epoxy. I have had trouble with OS risers popping off but I think that was before I got my belt sander. The 36 grit belt seems to leave a texture that epoxy likes.

Very nice bow there DC. That one looks great coming or going. Really like the profiles.

I got the idea for deflexing like that from this thread http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,63379.0.html
So it's Simk's idea. Don't want anyone to think I had an original thought :D

I sometimes take one of those little Japanese handsaws and cut about 6 slots within 5/8" of the back over a 4" span. I could make a wedge to fit in the slot but have never bothered Epoxy seems to work fine. I have a hickory stave I plan on doing this to and I will add wedges on this one.

That could look real nice I think.

Beautiful shape DC

I'm with Arrons' thoughts.Kind of looks egyption like profile.Very nice work and a very nice bow.
I'm pretty sure EA40 smooth on would hold those glue lines for ya.It likes a rough texture also.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys :) :) They keep me happy ;)

That really is a heck of a pretty profile. X2 on reminding me of an Egyptian horn design...I really like that, nice bow!

Very nice DC. You are making some excellent bows. I love the shape.
