Argh!
I just finished tillering (so I thought), a hard hitting Vine Maple Bow. It bent slightly through the handle and had just a small amount of handshock. Since I could not see anything on the tree, I had my wife take a picture so I could maybe find an imperfection causing the handshock. And there it was, mocking me and spitting right back into my face. >:( In fact it was so obvious even in the tiny screen on the camera that I immediately looked at the limb and found the 3" section that had some suspicious grain changes.
Unfortunately since I had shot it ~35 times, the hinge was weakend beyond the point of repair. I took it back to my bench and worked all around the hinge, would only made it worse and created a completely different hinge right below the lower handle.
So for now, after 20+ hours, it's dead and left for scrap. :-[
So now...I call one and all who have been down this road bafore and say, Let's Unite!

Nice form Joe and the boots are dandy ;D
-
Joe, the tiller looks fine to me. Oh by the way, welcome to the club. ;) You ain't the founder by any stretch of the imagination! ;D Pat
-
Rotate the pic counterclockwise and you'll see it's more obvious. And yeah I could even see a slight decrease in the limb thickness when I took a much closer look. And I'm only talking about maybe .020" or less. Man oh man what a difference that made. I could have left it "as is", but I'm probably a little too OC to settle for less. I'm sooooo close to making a perfect Vine Maple "Bull Buster" I can almost taste it... :'(
-
i havent really had a hinge yet ;D famous last words :)
but the tiller really does look pretty good
-
Joe, I would agree with pat ,it's looks good. Yes it dose look to be bending a touch more on that bottom limb but I think your being very critical on yourself. As for looking for the hitting the perfect bow That might prove to be very elusive. Havent seen anyone that was completely satisfied with a bow.
How about some more close ups looks like a sweet bow. And if ya got it shootin decent ,have fun with it. ;D
Ps. Find the narliest bend up stick that you can and build a bow with it. ;D It will help you get over the critical eye senario. ;D ;D Or els you'll just go into denial like me. :( Keenan

Nice SWAMPERS....Huh Dana!!!!!!!!! Could pass as a Yooper...if He didnt talk!!!!!!
-
If it's the bottom limb, can't tell by the picture, flip it over instead of rotating the picture. :D The bottom limb usually has the most stress.
-
Joe, I think you've become unhinged. LOL. Get it unhinged? :) Come on that tiller is right on! I've had enough hinges to know one when I see one. Nice job. Your intervention worked. BTW to avoid hinges take long strokes which often go beyond the target removal. Take off a LITTLE wood and check tiller often. Jawge

I think that you are losing it....you need to get some Drugs for that OCD....there is nothing wrong with this Bows Tiller.....I would only hope to get mine that well done....look at it Joe...it's dead on

I think everyone is right. You got yourself a mighty fine bow there with great tiller. Remind me sometime to show you what a real hinge looks like. :o Justin

I agree....You are crazy. I can't see any hinge. I even rotated the pic. 180 by standing on my head. I can only hope to make the VM you sent me into such a fine bow.

Dead and left for scrap ? ??? ??? ???
-
??? ??? ??? I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Whatever's causing your handshock, it ain't a hinge, because there ain't one that I can see. Now YankeeTejas, he's definitely getting his hinge on. :)
-
Looks good to me,Now the other one that yankee posted ,that's more like it.
There is a big difference in a hindge and one that ant bending just prefect. Most
all wood bows don't. :)

Guys:
The boot jokes are crackin' me up. :D Yes I believe I bought them @ GI Joe's for like $25, and I probably got ripped off.
I hate to tell everyone this, but it really did have a hinge and like I stated, once i inspected the limb more closely it was obvious. And yes I know I'm being more critical because every time I string up my 70# John Strunk bow and shoot it, it has zero handshock and is perfectly tillered. I'm just infatuated with never settling for less.
Having said all of that, remember that I said it HAD a hinge?... :'( I regret to inform the people of Primitive Archer.com that I absolutely torched this bow when I chased that low spot out of the bow.
Maybe this is a clear sign that I'm seriously OCD, or just an impatient fool? I don't know. But...next time I think I have a hinge I promise to post pictures before I go insane and go on a snipe hunt. Especially when I have 25+ hours into it.

Joe, For your next lesson in wood bow making, we will try to teach you patience. ;D That is one of the most important lessens you will ever learn. Also, if you save your "mistakes" they are very valuable tools also to remind you of what not to do. You have heard us talk about "the corner of shame". well, most of us have one and I for one have dug deep into mine from time to time and resurrected some fine bows...after a little thought and a bit more work. ;)
I still have my first osage bow I "built" almost 20 years ago. It was overdrawn and blew big time but I have studied that break many times to see just why and how it broke. If nothing else, save your boo boos to make a bow for a kid in your neighborhood. He(or she) will remember it for years to come. Pat

That was a nice tiller Joe. Too bad you torched the bow. ???
-
Vine maple dont throw much Heat Joe....you want Me to send you that Hickory Bow!!!!!!!! ::)

I'm sure Mr Strunk didn't hit home runs on his first bow when he fist started. Jawge
-
It looked good to me.
We can't see how wide the tips were, but narrowing the tips probably would have helped with the hand shock.

I think you could have salvaged some of your work by installing the longbow to altatl conversion kit. Online images lie anyway, so if you saw a hinge it was there. Did you at least heat up some coffee or shim a table leg with the left overs?
