Title: Knotty stick virgin
Post by: Ben.Kellerman on May 06, 2018, 12:50:31 pm
I am a little hesitant about posting this knowing the experience, skill, and dedication level of the folks on here but here's my first attempt working with a stick with knots.  Only my second attempt with a cut tree and not a board.  Any how, 54" ntn and about 35# at 24".  Maple backed with camo linen.  Tiller is a bit wonky with the knots, but she seems to shoot pretty nice so I'm satisfied.  I'll try to add a full draw pic when I can borrow a 3rd hand.  As always, thanks for looking and thank you to everyone on here for sharing your wisdom and experience with the beginners!

Also just realized that pics are really squished and distorted.  Sorry

Yeah if you don’t resize them right through the forum they get warped looking.
I use imgur these days.
But I clicked on the photos and the brace and everting looks good:)

Always a bit of a confidence builder getting a shooter out of one of them. I can tell the pictures are squashed. Think it took me longer to figure out how to post pictures on here than it did to make a bow. Keep on posting them.

Thank you guys for the kind words.  It's been a fun few months of making shavings and saw dust with this new addiction.  Without further a due, the full draw!

Thank you all!  Only strange thing about this bow(besides the knots) that threw me off was that I dried the stave in a form to shape in some reflex and I lost every bit and more as soon as I braced it.  I have another stave in the same form that I'll be starting on soon.  Maybe there is something I did wrong or could do better to hold some of the reflex on this next one.

Thanks upstate!  I can really start knocking bows out now that we finally have spring in our neck of the woods!

I used to do the same drying in reflex on a 2" by 4" years ago too with elm.Red elm to say the least. Most times it always turned out to be wishful thinking. It practically always pulled out every time.
Then I got a heat gun and  things changed a little....lol.

Brother you ought to be proud of that stick. I always shy away from big knots. I’m a chicken lol.

If you are going to hesitate to post any bow, hesitate to post the better ones.  Sure it is nice to see folks complimenting you on what worked. However, the learning comes from posting what didn't work so well. That way the conversation can turn to design and execution. The philosophy around here is to learn and help others learn, and be polite doing it!  So feel free to post your dogs, we are a dog friendly community, LOL!

As for drying-in reflex, I have always been sceptical and my own experiences have had abysmal results.  But like Ed said, a heat gun is a game changer!

Keep posting, we'll keep reading and discussing!

Thank you JW.  Being a newbie to the bowyer scene, I wasn't posting this stick to get an ego boost.  I was extremely spectical that I got the tiller right and my fine details dont compare at all to most on here.  I am on the other hand, blown away that I guess my own criticism is greater than the general public.  As for the heat gun!?  I've "seen"/read many people using many different ways to set reflex?  Heat gun, oven, stove top, outdoor fire pit?  Is direct heat the main advantage of the heat gun?  And can other methods still be successful?

Focused direct heat that you can manipulate, that's how I think of the value of a heat gun.

Keep posting, I like what I see so far!

Convenience is the biggest reason. They have at least one disadvantage and that is the use hot air which can curl around the back and scorch it. Radiant heat is the best IMO. I made a radiant heater to do one whole limb at a time and it worked great on limbs that were straight in both directions(rare) but any bend, sideways or reflex/deflex and it became mostly useless so it hangs on the wall. I think a properly jigged hotplate(aiming down so you can see what's happening) would do a good job with no back scorching.
