What's treated obsidian? Surely not heat treated...? P

Very nice work Don.

Nice! Like the extra touches on the handles.

thanks guys,
Yep to it's treated to 500 deg.
I made a sheath too.

Wait, you could heat treat obsidian? I asked about dacite before but people told me that it wouldn’t do anything. I’d love to learn more.
-
Mexican Green is somewhat rare . The 80 lb. spall I got was totally dehydrated.
It would splinter into a million needles just abrading the edge. I have had
some dried out dacite. A little heat helps. Most lava has seen 3,000 degrees
so how can 500 hurt?

So it helped make it less brittle? Ooooh, now I wonder if soaking flakes before knapping would make it more durable
-
The theory behind soaking or licking flakes before
detachment is to fill in any tiny voids so the flake
force is uninterrupted. ??? Soaking is good. Some bury material.
