Title: Hazelnut haul
Post by: Keenan on March 28, 2008, 08:44:25 pm
;D ;D ;D A good friend just stopped by with a little surprise. Seems he made a trip to the valley and on his way back home he drove by a hazelnut tree farm that had cut down the trees and were getting ready to burn them :'( :'( So he rescued a few  ;D ;D  Not knowing much about bow woods he opened the back of the truck and asked "is hazelnut any good"? ;D ;D ;D    I know JJ and Tiller find it hard to believe that I have friends so here's the proof :D   Keenan

;D Keenan, you got friends in high places, or vice versa ;) Don't you just love it when you don't have to break a sweat, to get free wood!

Good haul Keenan!! I just love these success stories - even though you haven't actually built anything from them yet, I know bows are forthcoming ;D. Somthing about raw materials gets me fired up :)..

Do you know which sides are the tension sides?  The last few staves I harvested I marked the tension sides, and when I cut them in half with a bandsaw, it was obvious the tension sides had more spring in them.

Joe,

I've never worried about that with hazelnut - it doesn't seem to hold tension like vine maple.

 Good friend for sure. :)
Gordon thanks for the info. The bark isn't wanting to come off very easy but not going to complain. ;)
JJ Don't worry I think there will some that I can trade. I'm not sure how to approach these staves they are straight with almost no knots or severe kinks to work.  ???  I've never had this complication befor ;D  Keenan

keenan-
Nice haul.  You will find that hazel is very easy to work with.
They can have fairly thin rings, so be careful with that draw knife. :D
