Nice pictures Ed. Thanks for sharing them. We had our first "sign" of a Kansas Spring the other day. A tornado watch...  ::)
Today, as I type this, it is snowing.  ???

That's a beautiful bird Ed.

We're getting an ice storm here in Rochester tonight. The weather man says power outages are "likely" due to heavy ice accumulation and high winds.  (W

We just lost power for 3 days last week!

Come on Spring! We need you! NOW!

Yup saw about twenty Robins (the birds) on my lawn yesterday. Ice storm today and tomorrow. Electricity is out. Been real cold spring here so far. Seems more like February but the animals seem to know it mid April. The plants still seem to think it's February though. No flowers or even anything green here.

Lots of crazy spring weather that's for sure.I hope everyone stays safe.It snowed over 12" 150 to 175 miles northwest of me too.We just got rain here then.Which we need.
Robin described the bird to me at first and I know she knows what a cardinal is but this one was different. It's  supposed to have been spring here for a while as the old turkey vulture is here some time ago already.

Yup the turkey buzzards are here cleaning up the deer that didn't make it through the winter. We've still got lots of deer here but they are really getting hungry. I found a dead one behind my barn. They've been on my lawn trying to get something to eat. It's time for stuff to green up.

Darn those Robins are smart  :).

There's a few Summer birds that have come up, Robins included, but we are supposed to get 2 days of freezing rain so they may be regretting that decision.

We have robins all over now. I say this a slow spring up here, but its probably more usual than the 1 week long springs we had been getting. Like BJ, we had super high winds, sleet, snow and rain that tarted Friday. Today I woke up to about 2" of snow, but the wind is only blowing 15-20 now. Yesterday was spooky, we are surround by woods and I was just waiting for a tree to come down.

We've got a little snow now this morning. It'll be gone in another day or two.Robins have been here for quite some time too and contrary to what some believe they eat more different things than worms.....lol.If they did'nt they would starve.....lol.

Lots of snow and ice for me.  It looks and feels like January. It was the annual trout opener yesterday and I stayed home and watched a blizzard. I am ready for some warm weather. Still snowing now.

I know what your saying Pearl. Sure hope they aren't dead ash trees. I can't believe how many people still have huge dead ash trees surrounding their houses. Don't see my lawn or the Robins today. Just snow, ice and broken tree branches today.

Robins love fruit.  They'll eat Chokecherries when they are ripe and spit out the pits, makes a real mess.

We have orioles coming soon that eat our strawberries and wild black raspberries, and I think the robins do too in fact. The scarlet tanenger pictured I think is a seed eater just by the shape of it's beak.I think they all eat bugs but there is'nt too many bugs flying around yet....lol.
Sorry to hear all the nasty weather some are getting lately.Sounds like familiar mess's I've had to clean up too.As long as the current stays on.An ice storm 12 yeas ago here left me without current for 5 days in the 3rd week of december.I thought it was an interesting experience at first.I was ready to perservere in style.I got to admit though that after about 3 days of no electricity it got old....lol,but it was something to just get used to that's all.

Spotted a bluebird in the yard yesterday and the swallows might be back too so guess Spring is here.  :)

Cool......A lot of the usual suspects are here too but I'm afraid were going backwards again for a week again.Another 6 to 7 inches of snow to the north of me.

A couple of hours ago my back yard was covered in robins frantically looking for food in the snow covered landscape.  I will take that as a good sign of things to come.

Now the snow is coming down real hard though.  Hopefully this is it though.

Same here, Swampman. That's how we know it is spring...IT SNOWS.  Around here winter is for cold, spring is for snow. That way you suffer longer and are more pure of heart.

Well this is a sure sign of spring in my book. Dragging the driveway with the snowblower still on. Still snow and puddles on the north side of barn but the main driveway is coming around.

Still haven't tilled up the garden tho, I ain't THAT optimistic...  ::)

Ed I'm thinking this week I'll it's might be safe to in hook the snowblower and store it away. Not saying we're done for sure with snow but usually it goes away fast enough now I don't blow it anyway. Let hope so anyway.

Here's my snow mover being used some years ago.A 1966 1850 diesel Oliver.I've had this tractor for 38 years.Still have it.Used to be my practically everything tractor till retiring.Field work and harvest work that is.Some years there's more snow to move than others. This paticular year we got more than our fair share.
I just mowed the yard here for the first time today.Soon the garden will go in all the way. We've got radishes planted for now.The sap will flow good soon and a hickory or two will get it's bark popped off.

That's an awesome tractor Ed. Wish I had me one of those.

In my experience, there no more sure sign of spring than finding the first couple Morels of the year. Found these two little guys on Saturday...

The dandelions are blooming and, with that, the Goldfinches have arrived.   :)
(And some more thunderstorms...)  :(
Title: Re: Good signs of spring
Post by: BowEd on May 01, 2018, 10:30:13 am
Paul...do you feed those gold finches any? Many people do here.I do.So much so they call then Iowas' welfare bird....lol.Saw the grosbeaks arrive yesterday.Red headed wood peckers too.In all I suppose we got 7 different kinds of wood peckers observed mostly here. The biggest being the flicker down to the small downy[there is a large downy too] and white bellied nut hatch.
No indigo buntings yet.Awful pretty bird & no humming birds yet either.
As soon as the carpenter bees arrive it'll be full blown spring. It takes consistent 80 degree weather for them to appear.I use traps to get rid of them.

No Ed, I don't feed them but I've got so many dandelions and thistle and wildflowers around that they can fend for themselves. I do see them at the bird feeders now and then tho.

I see yes that's always good.I feed them here.Robin likes to take pictures of wildlife.
A smart old Amish fellow told me once before Robin moved in here.He sad Ed if your gonna have a woman around. You better give her some chores....lol.So she has her animals to take care of.She does'nt like one of my prolific pets that are around here though. The dreaded wood tick and their out in numbers now too.

No dandelions yet but I'm sure it won't be long now. Cut grass first time. Just a couple days in the 70's and wow stuff greened up. Deer are happy now.
Been planting almost around the clock now for three days. Hoping to finish sugarbeets today. Suppose to start raining anytime now and then for next three days rain. Sure like to get em done so I can switch over to corn.

I just was checking and the lettuce is starting to come up, gonna have to get the fence around things soon. Apple trees are in full bloom but there's storms coming and hail can do a number on the blooms.  >:(

BJ...Always a good feeling to get it in just before the rain.18 to 20 hours days for you I imagine this time of year.In the tractor.Sugar beets and corn. Can you rotate them just like soybeans and corn?
Paul....You gotta use your bow and arrow to kill those rabbits if that's what the fence is for.....lol.Our radishes are up & the rest of the garden is a done deal.Stormy weather coming here too for the next 2 days.Nothing too life changing here for us unless a tornado wants to visit or like you say a deluge of hail.Keep an eye out for that teal colored cloud bank.Bad news a coming.

Well finished planting sugarbeets. Ed we usually use a corn, edible bean, wheat, sugarbeet rotation. It's always good to get the sugarbeets planted and up. You can't plant them very deep and it's nice to get them in before it get hot and dry.

I see about planting depth of sugar beets.Makes good to have some good leveling ground equipment then.Corn is always 3 to 4 inches while soybeans here half that depth.Oats and alfalfa most times just harrowed in if broadcast. The three main crops planted here.
A few others a little but mainly those.

Been seeing a family of foxes every morning by the river when I take my daughter to school. Mamma and her three pups..  Few days ago I noticed a dead adult on the other side of the road and thought DAM.... Luckily it was a male, looked like maybe coyotes got him?  Didn't see mamma or the babies for a couple days, but mamma was sitting out there today so I'm hoping the rest are ok.

Had a cool drizzling day yesterday with wind out of north east right off the big lake. Makes it cold and damp. Last night wind switched out of south and warmed up to 54 and got a nice .7" rain. The worms are out and you can smell spring in the air. I'm thinking if it stays warm our morels will probably start popping up soon. Usually around Mother's Day here.

Same here around Mothers' day. Most of the southern parts of this state have all the corn in already. Now to the soybeans.Different story for the northern half of the state.More snow and cooler weather of course, but with that comes good sub soil moisture for them. The southern part could be a hurting for moisture sooner.
