A few years ago I was pruning the big Purple Beech in the front yard and removed a branch that had been pruned a few times before. I was about to throw it on the burn pile and took a second look. This is what I made from it. It's 62"NTN measured straight across. Limbs are Osage 1 3/8" tapering to 1/2" tips and about 3/8" thick. These are the limbs I was considering backing with Maple but I didn't have to. Tips are fumed Ocean Spray. Riser is beech. I'm not sure where to measure the draw length but it's 38# at about 26". Limbs are finished with Tung Oil and riser is Rustoleum Ultracover gloss clear. It shot in the very high 170's at a bit over 10gpp. I did hit 180 once. I don't think it was full draw as I was still a bit chicken that it would disassemble itself. If it holds together I will skinny the tips and see what it will do.

Not a huge fan of those type of bows, but that is sweet! Nice bend! And that handle looks perfect. I bet your glad you kept it. Cheers- Brendan
-
Yeah, I don't like them either. I won't make another but I had that stick. It does shoot nice though :D
-
Whoa... that is impressive. So are the bolts and limbs removable? Like a true take down
-
Yup.
-
That is so cool. What keeps the limbs aligned ?
-
Two more pins. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

Sweet bow and impressive speed. Kinda fun to imagine how you might fool some glass folks at the range. Shave down those tips and see what she's got!
-
Looks solid to me, Don. Cool bow and nice work on the riser.
-
That is a beauty, mighty fine work . :)

I like to see out of the box creativity, neat bow!

Very creative DC and useful too.Pretty riser for sure.Never heard of purple beech.I shoot with a friend that is into making take down bows.FG though. He adjusts the poundage by the degree of angle the riser is that the limbs are on with different risers using the same limbs.8 degree/10 degree/12 degree etc.Not unheard of I'm sure.
I see the bows as almost angular built.Like Egyption type really.
-
That's a sweet looking shooter. Love the riser.
-
That's just crazy right there!! The time and precision that a project like that must demand would probably killed me!! Very nice!!
-
Thanks a lot guys. Getting the alignment was a little tricky as the drill kept walking sideways. I guess the wood density varied with the grain some. I had to redrill the pin hole 3 or 4 times. Purple Beech is an ornamental European Beech. I think I will stick to more conventional (nicer looking) bows though. I may even move these limbs to a proper handle, Osage is rare in these parts :D Here's the pins and the insert I used for the bolt.

+1.
DC you should be more than proud of this one. No need to get a proper riser, I like this one much more than the fancy one's people make.
-
That’s a nice takedown don.
-
Don does the bow seem dead quiet like a one-piece? Or, does it have a little "slap" sound to it?
-
It seems like a one piece I think. My hearing aids miss some frequencies though but it doesn't seem much different than my other recurves.
-
Cool. My 3 piece had a noise coming from between the riser bed and limb. I ended up adding a 1/4" wide piece of Velcro to the riser just ahead of the pin right at the ends of the riser. It made the bow silent and didn't hurt a thing.

???

You and Velcro ??? ::) ;)

I was toying with the idea of putting a thin rubber layer in there but it hasn't needed it --yet. It may loosen up a bit as it gets shot in. Of course maybe I just can't hear it. :D

I like the angular limbs makes for a fast bow , I love the riser good job !
-
Wow! What a beautiful bow. You did an amazing job.
-
That's a very unique bow. Great job.

I'm a big fan of anything cool, new, or different, esp. if it arose from the roots of knowledge, skill, and solid craftsmanship. Looks great! Even ignoring the handle and the modern look (which I'm just fine with), the tiller is fantastic.
I have been considering something similar using some slightly snakey and character-ey BL limbs left when I destroyed the handle trying to take out too much deflex. I'm inspired, thanks.
-
I couldn't imagine the work involved in getting that riser and those limbs lined up as well as keeping the tips aligned. It takes a craftsman to pull something like that off. Excellent
-
Don't know why you dislike them, other than a modern twist. I think it looks great!
-
That's a sweet looking bend DC. I never even considered building one of those, but after seeing this one, I might just try it one day. I really like the idea of using a really funky-cool piece for the handle. Opens up the doors of possibility.
Sweet bow, as usual. ;)
-
I had the idea brewing in my head and was thinking driftwood or roots or something. I almost threw it away.
-
Glad you didn't. 8)
