For years now I’ve used a bandsaw. But when I’m in the mood for some more traditional work I’ll pick up a hatchet or heavy machete to rough out a stave.
For the last four or five months I’ve really come to love the D-Adze for doing my rough out work. A single edge bevel lets me get closer to my lines, more so than I would feel comfortable when using a hatchet. The one I made was constructed from an old yew stump I had laying around for a few years. And the thought to make one came to me whilst reading the book “Cedar” which is all about the tools, techniques and products made and used by the people of the Pacific Northwest and the wonderful Western Red Cedar.
The eye is abolone and some turquoise for some odd ears in the usual U form.
An old hatchet head filed down the the shape and edge I wanted, lashes and pinned on.

That's really cool Bryce, i like it.

I can see where you would have excellent control with that tool. I might have to try one.
-
I like that! I may have to make one for myself to try.

That is sweet!

Thanks guys. I highly recommend this tool. Quick (depending on how elaborate you decide to get. And easy to use.
A bit more finesse over a hatchet

Really cool, I like it and I'm thinking about making one. I have a question for you. Do you think the hatchet head offers anything advantageous over a flat blade? I have some 1/4" think flat bar stock carbon steel I could use.
-
Very cool - well done :OK Bob
-
Bryce, that's a very nice homage to the Chinookan peoples, not to mention being a practical tool.

Adds weight into the swing.
Thanks guys:) I have some spare heads if y’all need one hit me up.

That looks like a really useful tool! And not to mention pretty! I use a hatchet a lot and I switch to a rasp to get to my lines.you got me thinking there...

Very useful. Lots of applications as well. I’ll probably use this adze and another called an elbow adze when I start my dugout canoe; just waiting for the wood to season.

Thanks for sharing, I need to check out that book as well!

I love this concept! It also looks amazing.

Thanks for the compliments gentlemen:)

Bryce, I'm going to make one with a lawnmower blade, I think. No axe heads to spare! Looks cool, and I lost my best machete so my hands get tired.
-
You could cut a space under the blade and fill it with lead to give you a little extra oomph.
-
Yeah, something like that! :D

Im making a smaller one using a hand Planer blade. With some heavier wood; ocean spray and and maybe Oregon white oak. If that one doesn’t turn out.
Let me know how it turns out when you’re done.

do you think using a cut-down chisel blade might work?
-
I also have a blade from one of those sharp floor scrapers. I wonder if the steel is good enough.

.
I don’t see why not as long as it has a good amount of wait behind it

Darn it! now I gotta make one of those for the tool box. Great job right there. John
