Title: River Cane find.(Now w/pics)
Post by: ricktrojanowski on March 24, 2008, 10:26:09 pm
I think I located a small patch of rivercane.  I cut about 30 pcs.  The plants range from about 6-8'  Really smooth nodes and virtually no branches except at the top.  Also really straight.  Does this sound like cane.  I can post pics if that would help.  It looks like it would make good arras,  The only problem is that I have to harvest in the cover of darkness due to less than ideal location. ;D

Looks like something to me :D, I'm about ready to give up - have been searching for switch cane for (going on a year now) and think I've finally found some in Northern Alabama along the Tennessee river. Only problem is It's a National game preserve and I know they won't let me cut any, even though they have acres of it mowed down along the road just because that's tha rules >:(. Not to worry, I already have some in the truck ;D..

It's funny people would rather let something go to waste rather than let it be used.  "No you can't cut any of that, Sorry"  Next thing you see is a chainsaw, payloader and a 40 yd dumpster full of once great usable stuff.  Go figure. ???

Yep, get's very irritating Rick >:(. I seem to run into that everywhere I go. Last time it was osage trees at a new housing addition being put in - acres and acres of osage, oaks, elm, you name it. I couldn't find anybody on site big enough to tell me to go ahead, I even called several of the stump removal company's in the area to see if I could gather just a few in front of their dozers and chippers (oh, we don't do that - was the reply) - drive by a month later and their ain't a tree left standing >:(!

Thats progress.......they cant let you have it...because of the Liability....if you get Hurt and Sue them out of Business..I asked a huge landowner here (240 sections = 153,600 acres) if I could cut some Mesquite for Bows and firewood..He told His Ranch Foreman to tell Me that His Lawyers wouldn't approve it...because if I got Hurt during the process of harvesting the Wood...on Said Landowners Property....they They may be Liable...and I could and would most likely Sue..........sothis Spring I drive by....and the had 4 D# Dozer's with 3 foot rippers on the Back....taring up every Mesquite i sight.....so that the Grasses will grow thicker for Grazing....now His Land is littered with debris Piles 2 foot tall and 40 foot wide....of all useable Wood that they are going to set fire too....as soon as we start to get some rain around here....PROGRESS........it really sux........

Rick and Paul ya'll are right. Government agency's are kinda like when Pa said, "Do as I say, not as I do".  I once saw the Water Mngt district plow a big fire cut here. When they got through I saw about 30 chopped up ,protected, Gopher Tortoises. Anybody else would have been fined thousand's of dollars.

Cane, like all other shoot shaft material, is a renewable resource it managed properly. Many shoots(culms in the case of cane) can be harvested each year without any noticeable depletion to the source. Nothing in nature goes to waste...except maybe humans.  ;D     Pat

That's too bad Dennis. I'm about ready to start some after dark quiet bowsaw covert operation's on the smaller trees that nobody's going to miss anyway ;D.

Here's a coupla pics of the river cane I came across. I know that it is indeed river cane cause it's growing right alongside the river ;D.

Hey cowboy and TNALGA border folks, i'm from chattanooga and all, and i've found a couple of spots driving around doing lawn service, this stuff doesn't grow as tall as bamboo, and it's got a reddish brown color to it, I don't know a whole lot about the local flora, though i'm a native to here
I cut only a few pieces, it's not entirely straight either, I have yet to actually straighten any arrows i've cut O_o

That's good to hear Hillbilly, after all the rivercain finding failed attempts I've been through I was sure hoping you would concur rather than it may be this or it looks like that ;D. Actually Ridgerunner had already confirmed it for me, shew :P.
Good for you Rick! Hope you got away with some good stuff ;D.
Post some pic's of what ya got humaza - somebody here will know what it is.

i'm trying to get accustomed to the forum, not sure if this pic is gonna load.

the stuff was all about 6 feet high, was a red with green undertone, now that it's dried it's a kind of pale green color.

This was just by my sister's house, they're quite mature, I took the advice and took ones with the papery areas instead of stems, I see that they're much rounder there and don't have the little dips in them, but they're kinda thick, I managed to get about 8 arrow lengths
