...well, my first bow back after several months of not being able to work on anything.
My first project is a Red Oak one, not the perfect board (quite a few run offs) will be backed eventually ( I got a new idea about this )
I was really sick this week, so yesterday was the first time I could put a rasp to it.
this is how it looked this morning,..still using the fine side of the ferrier rasp at the moment, it floor tillers really strong still

this is the morning view from my fair weather working area
(http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d124/NorthShoreLB/002.jpg)
had to go to work all day,..but lets see what tomorrow brings ;D ;D ;D
-
Looking good so far, nice sleek start on that one. :) Keep us posted.

The bow is looking good, and so does the scenery! :)
-
thanks guys, ...yeah the scenary shot was what made me post this pictures really ;D
-
Very nice bow... what is all of that green stuff in the background....we have wind and snow coming..Hawk
-
That looks awesome. The bow and the scenery both. Where do you live?
-
Alright! Good to see you back and building, Manny. Jawge
-
Now I Know right where you live Manny! Trees are bigger now, mountain looks the same..I'm interested to see your backing idea.

Being rasping and scraping for a couple of hours today ( what a plesure to work wood with hand tools is, so relaxing, time just flys)
I think I pretty much got to the desired profile ( once I put the backing on, because of all the run offs it's gonna go to a certain extent on the side of the limbs, so I'll want to avoid side tillering)
it still floor tillers a bit strong, I'll go work on it a bit and when it gets dark I'll start the reflexing/belly tempering stage.
pics to follow
Rich I'll PM you, I'd like to pick your brain about this backing idea I just got ;D
-
O.K., I think I got to the profile I was looking for

..Well, I'm gonna go shoot some arrows now, and tonite she'll get an artificial tan, and some artificial new curves ;D
-
NICE!!! Kind of a strieght piece of wood for you ain't it? ;D
-
Yeah Dano,...tell you what, ...it's hard working those strait bows, you really gotta pay attention :D :D
-
now she rests, after belly tempering and refexing, tomorrow nt Ill do a moe inense belly tempering, paying more attention now that i don' have to do any bending

So you can make a bow outta a straight piece of wood...I didn't know that! Always learning something new on PA...what a great site! ;D

You Tennesse boys are funny, one day I gotta come visit, and hunt some deer with you guys ;)
-
What about backing it with rawhide?
-
....O.K., this is how I'm gonna back it.
one layer of thin silk, than one layer of thin cotton, this should make it bulletproof, even with all the run of it should hold (I hope ;D ;D)
I'm hoping the 2 glue lines and 2 fabric layers will work a bit in retaining some reflex too :)
-
How about this,
both last nite and tonite tempering the bow I had beads of moisture surfacing, I can't remember ever reading a thread where someone mention this on tempering board bows.
Has it happen to you ?
-
Your in Hawaii Bro ther are beads of moisture on everything ;D :D Just caught this one and she's looking sweet, good luck with it Manny. Sounds like a good approach with the backing. Don't know what to say on the beads, never had that befor. Keenan

TEMPERED, REFLEXED AND BACKED, ...now the scary part starts,....TILLERING :o :o

-
wow, thats a neat backing, really like that. the hogs ya hunt will think a tigers near. :)
-
Wow I sure do miss Hawaii! Haven't been there the last two years.
When you compare your outdoor pics with DanaM's there's no question where I would like to be.
Also, I had to stop shooting arrows outside because we have had so much new snow the last few days.
Looking forward to seeing your final product.
-
She's bending so nicely on the tree that I was almost tempted to yank her to full draw...better not ;D
Question:....I forgot,.... long string shows stiff or week tips ?
thanks
-
TTT,...stiff or week with long string ?, I REALLY CAN'T REMEMBER ::) ::)
Don, next time you're in the islands give us a call.
-
Ant sure, only use long string until I get the tips out to 7 or 8 inches then I put it to a short brace.
and go to the tiller tree. Someone will come on soon I would bet and tell you.Looking good.
You changed your name, thought this was someone new. ;D ;)
Pappy
-
The long string can make the tips look stiffer than they actually are, I had one that looked good on the long string but when I braced it it was whip-ended. I try to get them off the long string sooner now. That's looking great, Manny.
-
Yup I agree with Hillbilly....I was always taught and noticed more bend in the inner third with the long string so you want to make sure that the tips look stiff. Cool fabric...is that the cotton or did you find printed silk that color?
-
I thought it was stiff,...thanks guys, I'll get her to brace as soon as I have a chance
Cotton it is stiknstring
-
...like others said, makes the tips seem stiffer than they really are.
I like the backing - does it match your surf board? :D
-
Nother good lookin bow - I like your backings! giving me more ideas, I need to stop gettin ideas and start using them ;D.
-
Hey Manny when we gonna see the full draw of this one?
-
It's finished, .....but the weather turned real bad so I'm holding of on spraying the finish it.
It turned out really nice ;D ;D
-
Howdy N. Pirate,
What widths do you have on that board bow - at the fades, mid-limb, and near the tips?
My red oak board bows are about 2" wide until mid-limb, yours seem much narrower?
Thanks, and good luck,
Canoe
-
Can't wait to (SEE) it....
-
Hey Manny when we gonna see the full draw of this one?
Ditto (for BOM)
-
That backing is super cool! Jim
-
Well it's still 90% humidity and raining, I won't spray a finish untill I'll be able to put this bow in the backing sun for a couple of days ;D ;D
Here's where I'm so far, I'm really happy by the retained sligth reflex :)

Ho yeah, Canoe, 1 1/2" at the widest
-
What kind of glue did you use for the backing?
-
Beauty of a bow! Jawge
-
Nice bow Manny. Why the name change?
-
bowkill, I used TB III
thanks George,
Ryan, ..well I was thinking to change to this name for a while, but I wanted to do it on every site, but I wasn't able to on tradgang, ...than the oder day I got kicked out (again ;D ;D), so I whent ahead and change it across the boards :)
-
"Nomadic Pirate" I like it!!! Nice work Manny, glad to see you back ate it.
-
Wow that turned out sweet Manny, the finish on the back is really cool and profile is outstanding. I like the name as well. Somehow it fits you Bro. ;D
-
That's coming along well Mani. You did a nice job on the handle and the profile looks great.
-
Nice job! I just got home with two red oak boards, gonna try and see if I can find a bow in one of them.
-
Like the color of the wood now, looks like a stain?
-
Cowboy, yes it's a stain, SEDONA RED from Minwax
Keenan and Gordon, yeah I'm really surprised by the profile too, 1 3/4" of reflex after belly tempering, and keept 1/4" so far , maybe because I whent sooo slow tillering this one ;D ;D, didn't even brace it untill I think I was pulling 16" or so.
-
Manny I just went back and looked at the last pic on page 3 I can't wait to see that incredible snake completeted. very nice color on the heart wood. ;D Keenan
