Title: Knot advice request
Post by: Mesophilic on December 19, 2017, 10:40:32 pm
Hopefully the pics come through, preview isn't working with my phone.

What would you guys recommend for this Knot? Right now the stave is 66" long by 2.25 inches wide at the knot, knot is .5 x 7/8 inches...and this knot is right in the middle of the stave.  On the back it's a little soft but not too pithy.

Thinking about a flat bow with this stave but not opposed to shortening it and backing with sinew.

I apologize for wasting you guys time.  I just can't get any pics to show.

Don't know if anyone can offer any advice without pics.  It is right on the sdide of the limb, has about a quarter inch of wood between the knot and the very edge.  Runs all the way through the limb to the center of the belly.

Completely understand if there's not much one can say under the circumstances.

Clean out the soft stuff and coat everything in the knot in thin superglue. Leave it full width on the side with the knot and let the other side flow wth how the rest of the limb wants to lay out. Then leave it a bit stiff, but still moving a little as you tiller out.
That's my take on it.

Shouldn't be a problem, just clean it up, leave a little wood around it and leave it a little stiff in that area as you are tillering it. ;)

Mmh, what is the dark stroke on the belly? A crack or a pencil mark?
Without any more info as the two pics, I'm with Pappy - leave it stiff in this section. with a stave 66" long, you have more than enough length to play with.

That is a the remnant of a relief cut from reducing the belly side.  Stave is still about 7/8th inch thick at this point not counting the sapwood I still need to work from the the back, and the cut is only about a 1/16th deep.
