Gotta put a few finishing touches on this shorty and call it done. It’s elk leg tendon with whitetail rawhide over it. Snappy little bow and fun to plink with. I really enjoy carrying such a small bow! 51” overall and about 60#
-
Here is the profile after a little shooting. Will put up a full draw this week.
-
That's a cute one, Steve ;). It looks really cool and fun to shoot. What's the draw length?
-
It likes 24” right now Eddie. I might get the handle working a little more tomorrow...
-
That short I wouldn't over do it too much, Steve. You can push it with both backings but the relaxed, profile will suffer.
-
thats a nice one,, plink it at a deer,, (SH)
-
I love short osage bows. That looks like a snappy little one!
-
There isn't anything wrong with a 24" draw ;D Nice looking shorty Parnell. I'm glad to see you getting some good use out of your new bow shop.
-
Nice bow.I bet shes a zipper!!
-
Lookin' nice so far! I'm getting very interested in shorties like yours.
-
Nice little bow, Steve. You like those hollow limbs don't you. That rawhide backing would love a little craft paint on it. :OK
-
That is a nice one. Never thought on a HLD/sinewed back combo.
I'm really curious about fd, castand performance.
Mighty fine work, Steve!

I agree with Clint that's a really nice draw length and sweet looking bow. That should make a very nice hunting bow.

Nice, i like to call them "ambush bows".
-
Getting some natural pigment together. Hardwood charcoal powder...Catlinite pipestone powder...might to an eggshell white and bind it with the egg white. Just debating on design.
-
Nice looking bow.
-
Nice Steve, sweet looking shorty. :)

Looking good! Excited to see what paint job you come up with!
-
Steve, try hide glue and a bit of soda as a binder. For me it works excellent.
-
nice shorty, like it, looking forward witch design you come up with

Soda, Simon? Just something like Sprite?
-
I'm guessing he meant baking soda Steve. Nice little bow

Haha, sorry Steve. Baking soda of course, Aaron said it already. A little bit mixed into the paint makes it creamy, much more comfortable for painting details. LOL Sprite - that's good!
-
i was gonna try diet coke,, glad you clarified,, (--)
-
Nice Shorty bow. Looks like it was would be fun to shoot
-
I wondered! ;D ;D ;D
That's funny, thanks for the suggestion, Simon. I'm going to take your advice.
I hope to make progress this evening.
-
I played around with pigment but wasn’t impressed with my result. Colored pencil came out real nice on the rawhide with tung-oil. The oil really made it happen. Just to wrap the handle...
-
very nice,, (-S
-
Yes. I really like the look of that :OK
-
Nice short bow, I like it! Do you have any pics drawing it?
-
I figure that’s about that. I’d like to do another one similar about 56” long and come to full draw. I’ve really enjoyed doing the rawhide work.
-
Great Job on that bend. I really like the art work too.
-
Thanks guys. So I got a new luggage scale for draw weight and it tells me 62#@23”. My old scale was shot. I gave the new one a measured test and it’s accurate.
-
Wow, sweet bend Steve. I like that bow a lot
-
That's one sweet little bow! Very inspirational!
-
Came out very nice, also the paint job is impressive.
Classy looking hunting weapon with a good drawweight.
Congrats!
-
Nice work Steve, looks very good in all aspects. :)

Awesome bend and bow all around Parnell. :OK
-
Great to see the bow drawn! Awesome looking bend, I would say it doesn't come any better than that! I bet it is a snappy shooter as well.
-
Very lovely short bow! Looks very authentic native american style.
Out of curiosity, did you work the back to a ring before sinewing this bow? If not did you remove or leave any sapwood?
-
Very nicely done, Steve. Cool little bow. I like the muted colors and the design. :OK
-
Many thanks guys.
240m- you do want to chase a ring still. I had a minor violation on one several years back, then sinewed it and when I went to tiller...BLAM. Broke under the sinew. With the time and effort you will put in, don’t settle. Garbage in = garbage out. :OK
-
Lovely finish on that! Nice clean pattern, i like it!
-
Parnell, cool to hear you chase a ring first. I was always told you dont need to if you build up enough sinew. But i still do it also.
Now once you have it down to one growth ring do you prefer to etch the back with a hack saw blade or something? Ive been doing this, but at the same i think thats almost kinda semi-violating the entire ring, but at least its even down the entire back.
-
Shorts!! I'm jealous.
Great bow though :)
-
Your bows are top shelf anymore ,great work on that.
-
That came out great, I always have fun with short bows even though I can't shoot them for beans. They are great for short range shots.
-
Thanks guys. Steve, I seem to be shooting a short bow better with a heavy draw weight. Makes me wonder about make no the next a little heavier toward 70#.
-
The opaque more faded out look of natural pigments is a lot more pleasing to the eye to me.Nice short bow.
It's that way with my beadwork also with opague and faded out beads.Quill work also.
-
I agree Ed. Flat bright colors just don’t sit right with me in this case. Funny how that is. A buddy is starting his first custom fishing rod and for that metallic colored thread is what’s most pleasing. Interesting how it changes between objects.
-
Whoowee! Look at that bend. It's a thing of beauty. Nice looking bow!
-
I appreciate the compliment, Weylin. Your work is something I’ve admired.
Thanks guys.
