Title: Dark turtle
Post by: osage outlaw on September 24, 2017, 08:21:05 pm
I found this guy while trimming trails Friday.  We have a lot of turtles on our property.  This is by far the darkest I have ever seen.  It was mostly black.  I moved him to the other side of the trail so he could be on his way.

I would be a little worried that the "dark one" could be a spy.
Stealing your secrets of bow making and such. >:D >:D

Used to see those little guys coon hunting in southern Illinois. The locals called them a terrapin species of box turtle. They would have a flipper hinge flap that would close on the bottom of their shell when they tucked heir head into their shell.

A box turtle, they are cool. When I was a kid we would get them and make roads in the sand box and try to keep them on the roads. But they would always climb over the "guardrails" .  I read they spend their entire life living in a 300 yard area. They live to be 50 to 100 years old, that's a long time to spend in one area. I guess that's a big area to a turtle.

We always called them box turtles.  When my sister was little she collected them.  My Dad built an enclosure in the yard for them.  Everyone would pick them up on the road and bring to her.  I don't know how many she had but it was a lot.  We let them loose on our property eventually.  Probably why we have so many around 35 years later.  She had a female lay eggs once.  She kept one of the babies that hatched and named it Fred.  We had him for years until I accidentally lost him one day when I was little.  She was mad at me big time.  She still brings that up about once a year.

I see them once in a while on my place, move a lot of them off the road, I think during there mating season. Usually  in the spring when things start to warm up. Always see some when I am bush hogging,
I try to miss them when I see them in time.

Don't make me take the time to download pics guys.....come on! there isn't a box species that looks anything like it, however the spotted turtle looks exactly the same. I think you guys fall into that "ironwood" category. If its hard wood and you don't know what it is, its ironwood. :)

Okay, this is killing me. Judging by the antics going on here I'm guessing "Pearl Drums" and "Pearly" are one in the same. Am I going nuts or are there two of you guys!?

Oh yeah, and I say box turtle. The markings on this one don't look circular enough to be a spotted turtle.

I've noticed it helps if you add your old screen name to the bottom tag line so people can see who it is. Couple months and you can remove it and everyone will have adjusted.

Got at least 6 John William's in the family, gets confusing as to whose whom!  I'll stay with Hawkdancer, it was hung on me by an Ojibwa scout leader over 30 years ago!  Change is constant - progress is optional. >:D (-P.

Turtle soup is good!, don't have much use for snakes, as long as they leave me alone.  Never had to acquire a taste for them! >:D -C-!  Frog legs are good!, but I prefer venison.

Dark Turtle... that's got a nice ring to it. Sounds like it could be a band. Play any instruments OO?

I can just hear the introduction now...

"On the main stage tonight, comin' together from all around the country to entertain ya'll at Mojam 2018, with the Clintster on lead guitar, Pappy on bass, H Rhodes on the Fender Rhodes electric piano, Mullet on lead vocals and none other than Chris 'Pearl Drums' Koenigsknecht on drums... DARK TURTLE!!!!

We call them terrepans or proper name box turtles. We have a lot of then to in southern Ky. Me and my daughter use to use a paint marker dates we would see them hoping we would see it again but never do did. We probably put dates on 50 or so

Upstate,
Great name, but " Ya gotta have a fiddle in the band"!!  "Little Fiddle woman" (Jacie Mc Connell) has fiddle, will travel - for right price!  Also has bow, muzzleloader, and center fire, will hunt!  Do have to get her a legal weight self or trad bow!  Right now, she just has a "wheelie" in pink camo!   This group might need a good seannachie, too(me)!   Way off the real turtle line, but we're having fun!
