This bow was made out of a sapling, it has a wicked bend on the upper limb that makes the braced profile and the full draw look a bit strange, but this was the best tiller I manage to get out of it.
68" ntn, assymetrical limbs with 1/8" of positive tiller, 63 # @ 27", strait after shooting it goes to over an 1" of reflex in a short time, being shooting it in with 800gr arrows and she likes them a lot.
Finished with spar urathane, the overlays are my favorite material, spolted Guava
I wanna show the grip before I wrap it

Nice wood and nice tease >:D Can't wait to see the rest of her. ;D Keenan
-
That guava's got some purty color and grain in it - cool lookin knot, you could almost use that for an arrow rest.
-
Nice Manny, like to see it when it's finished.
-
You just like teasing us don't you Manny? You're certainly off to a good start!
-
LOL - (What we can see is) Pretty Work, Manny - as usual.
-
Thanks guys, ..had to put the grip on ;D

Is that the natural color of guava or did you stain it?? What ever it is .... I like the color!!
Looking forward to more !!!!! 8)
-
It's beyond me how you make bows out of them little sticks ;D. Seems like I gotta have a six inch tree or better to even consider it - that's lookin good :).
-
The grip, I used the knot for shelf guidance

-
Nice great bow!
i havent seen one of your guava bows in a long time
-
I think you handled that kink in the limb just right. That looks great Manny.
-
Cool bow Manny, sometimes ya have see limbs like that from both sides. Beautiful work buddy.
-
Very nice looking bow!Now I have to go get the guava bow that you made for me a shoot it!
-
Right on Manny, Your back ;D ;D ;D Good job on a very tricky stave, I love it the natural color and the nock overlays look great. :o It's always hard to things to look right in pics when there is kinks, bends and twist nut it looks like you did an awesome job on it. Congratulations. Keenan
-
Great looking bow Manny. It doesn't look like you lost a step. Justin
-
Thanks guys,
I really dislike full draw pics taken on a tree (unless it's a simmetrical bow, and even than...)
the string is pulled a good 3" from where the nocking point is and the pressure on the handle isn't anything like mine,...guess I gotta start training someone to take full draw pics ;D ;D ;D
-
that's good to see: the guava-master is back! ;D ;D ;D
frank

Cool character bow manny, welcome back.
-
Good looking bow Manny, lots of character and really love the wood grain! :)

Sweeeeeeeeeet ;D. Piggies beware ;).
-
spot on manny. awesome
-
Awesome job on what appeared to be a NASTY tillering challenge. I love it!
Joe
-
Another cool bow, Manny. Keep it up so I'll get started on one of the staves I got from you. ;D Pat
-
That kink looks intimidating, but the tiller came out great. As the others said, Love the look of the guava.
Rick
-
Ditto everybody else's praise. Truly a primitive bow :) and worthy of its bookmark for March Self Bow of the Month
-
Cool Mannie! Still working on that guava ya sent me. Whats the best way to heat bend it to shape? Nice bow!
-
Oh! Forgot to ask how wide it is at its widest?
-
Heat gun David,..... if I recall properly, yours was pretty damn strait, as Guava goes :)
-
;D That upper limb looks a little like the upper limb on the bow you sent us! So what town are you living in? PM me if you need to stay "undercover." ;)
Rich
-
Rich, I'm in WAIALUA, ..nowhere near the beach :( :(..but it's quite a dry area compared to the NorthShore
David, the upper limb is 1 1/8" at it's widest, the lower 1 1/16"
-
It was straighter when it got here. Unfortunatly it warped when it dried some more. Now, it is reflexed in the upper limb 3/4 of the way from the end and dog legging prety bad. I will be playing with it in the future so I will go get that heat gun. Should I use an oil on the limb to keep it from burning and just heat one side or all sides?
-
Manny I am starting on the snakey one you sent , I have 1 5/8 inches wide to work with and like flat bows so am thinking of keeping all the width and about 67" for about 65# at 28-29"draw. Kenneth
-
can't wait to see it John, if I remember right, it was quite a wicked stave :)
-
Will try to get pics up in a bit. Having a bit of trouble seeing the grain on the back so stained and sanded to bring it out, dosen't seem to agree with the belly grain. Hate to have grain run off as it wrecked a bow once for me, but don't have a lot of wood to play with so might just have to over build a bit, tiller and hope it works. Kenneth
-
Maybe these pics will work this time and you can see what I mean. Kenneth

I live your stuff. :)
Pappy

I wouldn't worry about it John, ...I never do ;D ;D
-
Ey I live in Punaluu and was wondrin were do u get ur guava, can i have A staff , and do u kneed a backing for guava or is it good ???
-
Manny,
Could you explain how you do the handle wrap. Also, what material did you use? And it goes without saying, "Incredible bow!"
-
Holy cow !......how did this thread come back up, that was quite some time ago.
Laiebow, I would say guava is a real good bowwood, top bowyers have tryed it in the mainland and where impressed by it,.......I work at OLA Turtle bay, come and check me out and I give you all kinds of info.
NTProf, the handle looks like it was Jute, ...just a simple wrap, like a serving wrap
that bow was retillered to a 29" draw for a bowswap on Pirates of archery

Nice bow Manny,I like it it. The tips are great. God Bless
-
You are the man. i like how you left knots high like that.
-
Gorgeous looking wood:)
-
Manny I shorted out my hotbox the other day, couldn't heat up my guava yet, but soon...
Mine is plain white, almost looks like ash; hope I got the right kind. But anyway it's tough stuff and I'm sure it'll work!
How is it to heat treat it?? Steam or try??
That stuff really doesn't check, that's for sure...
-
Frank,
even here the color varies from really lite to quite dark, but then again you might have a different spieces, is it "Strawberry Guava" ?
even the real lite ones darken nicely once you put the finish on and pretty fast with exposure.
as for bending, Guava doesn't really want to bend much, really likes to go back to original shape >:( ......I had more success doing side bends on narrow handles or narrow limbs.
good luck and looking forward to see the finished product
-
800 grains, wow, how does she shoot with a crook in the limb? Fascinating looking wood :)

800 grains, wow, how does she shoot with a crook in the limb? Fascinating looking wood :)
It doesn't shoot any different than a bow without a crook ;D ;D ( as far I can remember ;) haven't seen this bow in a long long time )
