Hey you guys! Can anyone guess the movie this is from? Anyway, if you didn't get it from the title, you probably haven't seen it. This bow comes from deep inside an old osage log (another one that was laying around for who knows how long). I calculate that the 3-4 rings of growth it comes from came to be while the above-mentioned movie was being filmed, 1981-1985. Here's some info:
58" ntn
40# @ 27"
cherry bark handle w/ artificial sinew wrapped on top and bottom
padauk tip overlays

The tiller looks good although the upper limb looks a bit still but with that hole I'm not surprised. How does it shoot? I'd imagine it would have a thump when shot.
-
The tiller was kinda tricky and the extra weight around the hole does effect the overall balance and feel during release. That being said, it shoots fast and pretty comfortably considering.
-
That is quite a knot. Nice work getting a bow out of that.
-
Great job getting a bow out of that piece of wood. The tiller is a bit off but you probably already know that. Your bow gives me a little more hope on the one I have in progress.

^ Yes sir!
-
You could launch some tennis balls off that hole. Dog would love ya!
-
Seriously though, that's really cool.
-
If you had cut it in half at the handle and spliced the tip ends you could have had a nice compound type sight aperture. ;)
-
Very impressive. Well done.
-
Nice bow! Killer work man. Goonies love that show especially Sloth. Hahaha
-
Hey you guys! Haha great movie, and killer little bow jeff. Keep makin' shavings! Cheers- Brendan
-
Thanks guys. I'm not crazy about the tiller, but I never made one with a huge hole like that so I was happy to get a shooter. :)
-
I don't think your tiller is that off for that cyclops!!! What a gorgeous little bow. Way to get a shooter out of that piece of wood.
-
Cool a bubble blowing bow !

Old one eye is a real looker. Nice job getting a bow out of that one. That is a lot of weight out there but it sure looks cool.

I understand about letting the string loose. I built one similar a few years back. Excellent tiller on it though. Working around those kind of knots are a challenge. I like it Arvin.

Cool a bubble blowing bow !
I just read this and literally laughed out loud. ;D ;D You're a trip SB.
ajooter, glad to hear from ya and glad you think it's okay. I think of you as someone I've learned quite a bit from. Cheers!
Thanks BJ. Yeah, I've tried shooting it hole up and hole down. Even though the FD pic is hole up, I think it felt better hole down.
Arvin I think the hardest thing about working around the knot was the ring chasing. I had do dig out lots of different tools to stay with the one I chased. :KN

Very cool bow.

Oh man, you like the hard way - do you?
I've made a bunch of bows with knots huge lige this. I would reduce the walls of the eye to an even thickness, just the same like the limb portions above and below. Let the unbraced bow balnce on your finger at pivot point and watch what it does. I assume it produces some handshock at release.
It will not bend because of the geometry, but reduce a lot of weight. Not sure about the first third of the upper limb, maybe it should bend a little more.
Again, I admire your consistancy and courage!

Thats quite the big eye socket on Willie. :) Pretty cool that you got a shooter outta that piece of osage. Bows like this are fun simply because there will never be another exactly like it. Nice work upstate.
-
Thanks for the tips Simson. This is my first attempt at a bow with a hole like that so any and all input is welcome! Awesome couple of bows you just posted by the way.
BB, I think that's one of the things I love about osage the most... lots of potential for uniqueness and it's one of the only woods that will put up with including such abnormalities and still produce a shooter. Cheers
-
Quite a bow Jeff.Nice tribute to the wood and your skill. One of a kind.
-
Preciate it Ed. It's a weird one. Weird but kinda cool. :)
-
Nice...
When I read the title, I thought "Chester Copperpot"....I'm the right age :)
Could have been a nice peep sight if you could have placed it lower!
-
If it breaks you could always use for it for...wait for it...a booty twap! ;D
-
^lol. Hopefully it won't come down to that

I was just going through this thread again. Thought I'd already commented. Guess not, nice job, it's fun working around that kind of thing isn't it. Even if the bow doesn't shoot 180fps it's an accomplishment just to get it working. Good job!

Wow nice job tillering around that knot.!
