Title: Bamboo Backed Ipe D/R
Post by: osage outlaw on February 28, 2017, 10:15:41 pm
This is one of James Parker's bow blanks that I got from him at the Classic last year.  I got it shooting during the classic but I left it the full length.  I finally got around to finishing it up.  I cut it down to 63" long and retillered it.  I didn't check the weight but it feels a little heavier than my 50 lb bows.  I'm guessing 55-60 lb at 25".  The tip overlays are water buffalo horn.  I used the gloss rim sealer for the finish.  I'm not crazy about how the handle turned out.  I'm planning on getting another one from James this year at the Classic.  I'll do a better job shaping it.  The weather wasn't cooperating today.  I tried to get some pictures in between the storms.  They didn't turn out the greatest.  The orange and black dye job didn't show up very well.

For those of you who make it to the Classic this year check out James Parker's bow blanks.  They are very good quality.

Nice bow, Clint. Your tillering of it is what I'd call an almost perfect R/D tiller. Well done!   8)
Can't wait to see what James has  been working on lately.

Beautiful bow Clint, I don't see anything wrong with handle if it fits you good. I suppose you'll be giving up that yellow wood now. Seriously nice bow

Dang, I need to make one.  What about a build along someday.  What glue did you use?

This was a blank that James Parker glued up.  I don't know what glue he used.

I like it! I'm a sucker for boo backing. Did the blank come with the handle glued on or did you do that part?

I agree with Pat, too.  Tiller is just about SPOT ON!  Great choice of handle woods, too.  Very pretty bow, and certainly a shooter.

Nice one, Clint. I've done several of Jame's blanks and they are always Top Shelf. Isn't that draw a little long? ???

X2

Bob and I seem to be on a parallel wavelength or something. Seeing a well-tillered (not to mention sweet looking) r/d bow is just what I need right now.

I always look forward to seeing your work OO. Your skills have now reached a spiritual level (Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon" quote)

Ha!  I'm no where near that good.  I'm still learning on every new bow.

Awesome. The width taper looks sort of pyramid-ish. Yet people say that it's not a good profile for R/D bows???  :NN

Loon a lot of r/d bows are parallel 6-8" from each fade and straight taper from there, you can also recurve a straight taper from fade to tip

Oh, the black at the nodes and orange in the back is because of the dye? It looks very cool

Width taper is only 1/3 of the story on a pyramid bow, Loon.  Another third is the consistent THICKNESS all along, and the last is the circular arc to the tiller.

If you make a R/D bow with a straight side taper, you can manipulate the thickness to get the tiller right.  But, then it isn't strictly a pyramid bow.  That's all.
