I've always wanted to make a bow with a big knot hole in each limb. When I found this tree last winter I could see that bow hiding inside of it. After some careful and lucky splitting I had the stave how I wanted it. Right now I'm about 50/50 on if this will end up a bow or an explosion. I'll enjoy the ride either way. I cut it to 66" and I'll leave it a little wider than I normally do on an osage bow. I'm not going for a super fast bow. I'm hoping for something fun to shoot the 3D courses with.

A few days ago I removed the bark and most of the sapwood.

Today I cut it down to 1.75" and left plenty of extra width around the knots. This will make it a little easier to chase a ring.

The big heart shaped knot is worrying me. It trails off at the bottom. It's not really a crack. I can see a thin layer of bark inside of it. Pretty much the entire working portion of that limb will be split in half. I'm not sure if it will hold up.

The stave is plenty deep enough. I'd like to go down several rings to get to a thicker one. The top 1/4" or so has really thin rings. I have a feeling getting a clean ring chased on this will be a multiple day adventure. I will be going slower than usual on this one. I will bring it to Moontree, The Classic, and Marshall to work on it. I hope to get some help and add some good mojo to it.

Man that's a crazy lookin stave. Looks like about the 5th ring down on the left side of the end grain picture is money?
-
I'm going to have to watch out for Hole in the Bow Chuck at the Classic. He might try to take it back to his camp.

I'm going to stop at the first decent ring I can get cleanly chased around those knots.
-
Wow Good luck with that Clint, that is the mother of character staves there bro! If I make it to the classic I will definately check it out!

Dont let hole in the bow chuck walk off with it๐
-
It's going to take a whole drum Of CA to fill those ;D ;D
-
This will be fun to watch, Clint. Looking forward to seeing the finished bow at the Classic.
-
I don't think it will be finished by then Pat. I'll need some eyes on it while tillering. It won't fit on my tillering tree.
-
A few late night tillering sessions under the bow shed. Wouldn't be a Classic without it. ;)
-
I am planning to be at the TN Classic as well. Hope that makes it to a bow...very cool looking.
-
Hoping its end point is better than the one ya had last year at TN.
-
Yikes!!!Lordy Clint I seen long ago you were cleaning up some holes in some staves but don't remember these.I gotta see this shooting.Good luck.
-
Even if it survives as a bow, will your wrist survive shooting it?! Good luck! I bet that'll be a blast to work on.

Turtle bow....haha! Good luck taming that beauty!!

I like that Clint and you are right [Watch Chucky] ;) Looking forward to seeing it shooting. :)

I'm watching this one wow !
-
Can't wait to see it finish. It's going to look good.
-
Wow! I have to watch.
-
Looking forward to seeing that one Clint. Lots of good Mojo to go around.

That's a crazy stave. Hope it pulls through, Clint. Classic will be here in no time. Silver River Knapp-in is this weekend down here so here it begins for 2017.
-
I'm going to try to thin the tips down as much as I can past the knots. Hopefully the hand shock isn't to bad. I've made a few holey bows before and they shot fine. Of course the holes weren't this big and not as far out on the limbs.
-
That is a killer stave Clint! I been searching for one like that for awhile now. One thing for sure, it will make it or it won't. :)
-
I would have made it longer, cut it into and spliced it with the limbs reversed with the big holes near the handle.
-
Looks very cool Clint,
My buddy holeinthebowchuck probably wont get a good night's sleep until he get's to the classic to see this stave in person.

I have a few with big holes and the shoot fine, if you think about it the wood you leave around the hole just make up the difference for the hole no really any more or at least not much more weight in the limbs. ;) :) :) I would super glue the split and maybe if it seems to be moving put a wrap on it at the knot where it starts. :) Very cool. :)

Very cool Clintster. Looks like a whole bunch of nice staves from that tree too. The ring ratio would have me a bit worried, although not as bad as the bow you worked on at the Classic last year
-
wow you have guts to take on this project! I am a bit worried about the centre crack showing at the bottom of the heart shaped void towards the handle and that it might split right down the middle when tillering.
Good luck!
Phil
-
I believe in you, Outlaw!
Although, I would have been a chicken and cut it, like 78" for a 28" draw! ;D
-
I cut it at 66" long and I have a short draw length.

Sometimes it's nice to be short Clint.๐ You've got way more experience at this than me but I think I'd wrap it by knot and maybe handle.
Bjrogg
-
I don't like wraps but I think one might be in order for that split. I guess that would depend on whether it wants to twist.
-
I'll be watching!
-
I'm gonna stand back and watch. This is gonna be interesting! You bit off a big old chunk of grizzly bear with that one and you got some chewing to do, Clint.
Best of luck on this, I really wanna see you pull this one off just for the bragging rights!
-
I'm hoping I can still skin grizz JW
-
Looks very cool Clint,
My buddy holeinthebowchuck probably wont get a good night's sleep until he get's to the classic to see this stave in person.
Kevin
Maybe trade him a hundred pounds of yeti meat for it๐ฒ
-
It should hold up Clinster with that 12" draw length. Looking forward to seeing this one finished.
-
Clint
If you have trouble with it, I can take it down to my camp
and work on it at the classic.
Chuck
-
Wow that is gonna be so sweet if it holds together. Can't wait to watch the journey.
-
I have faith in you buddy. No problem!

Well, my progress on this bow has been slower than I had hoped for. I took it to Marshall and started cleaning up the back. I worked around the smaller knot and quit when I got to the big heart knot. Last weekend I went camping and brought the stave with me. I started cleaning up the remaining knot. I finished working around it today and got the back to a single ring. I still need to go down another 2 or 3 rings for the back of the bow. I estimated around 9 hours so far just in scraping rings. The stave has some dark red streaks through the wood. Once I get it down to a single ring I want to cut some thickness off of the limbs and bring it inside the house to loose some moisture. It will be a good while before I'm ready to start bending it.

A spray shellac can lid will drop right through this knot.

This bowl shaped area was a pain to chase a ring through.

I remember seeing that stave Clint, pertty hard to forget. Maybe it'll be a shooter next time I see it. It certainly will be interesting to watch this one progress.

Good luck man

That's a jaw-dropper, for sure.

I have a good feeling about this one. I think she's gonna make it! :BB (-S (-P

Oh yeah that's ring chasing two point one! Keep us posted I love what you did already!
