Hi guys I have a question. I have made a few bows out of Osage board and bamboo. I have a piece left over that is 56" long, 5/8" thick and Is 1-1/8" wide at the center. I have enough to make a bow that is 1-1/8"
Wide at the handle for a 4" handle then tapering down to 3/4" tips. What I was wanting to know if I backed this with bamboo that is about 1/8" thick would I have enough wood here for a bow that would pull in the 50's at 23-24" draw length. Thanks for your guys time and have a good day. Can post pics if needed

With a draw length of only 24-25" you should be able to do that. You could even shorten it down to 50" long. You'll have to nail the tiller as shorter bows leave way less room for error though. Just go slow and you should be fine. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Yea I have never made a bow that thin before so didn't know if I have enough material to work with.

Kick the last 3" to 4" up a bit to help with stacking. Keep it 56". You can easily make 50# and maybe even get a longer draw length too.
-
Do you mean flipping the tips? I was planning on trying to do that as well
-
If you have 5/8 thickness osage of course not all osage is the same don't know if your board is 1/4 sawn or strait grained ? at 56 in & a bendy handle bow you could easily make a 24 in un backed bow if the wood was strait grained if not raw hide or sinew backed would work , you could retro flip the tips for string angle you would probably end up with a sweet shooting 50 lb. Bow

Stick bender do you think bamboo would be a good choice with backing his bow. I was planning on using my sinew for anothe project

I realy dont know I have never used Bamboo only sinew & recently raw hide but if your board is srait grained you shouldnt even need backing for the bendy that was described Osage is a amazingly strong wood and it will suprise you how little you need of it to make a bow maybe some others will chime in on the bamboo !

I made a bow of about the same dimensions a while back from a stave except it was less than an inch at the handle tapering somewhat to half an inch at the tips, I think it was 56# at 27"

Thanks for the response guys. Stickbender it probably could pull it off but there are a few turnouts on the grain. I am just trying to reinsure it

I would post pic of it but it keeps saying the file is to large?

Splice in tips and extend it as much as you want.
