This is a simple board bow, a few years back desert disciple came over to work on a bow, he had two red oak boards glued up with the handles glued on and rest cut in but not tillered at all or very little, while working on one we stemed the tips and bent them on my caul. The other bow we got shooting but he left this one here planning on a return visit. Well he up and moved and I'vebeen kicking it around till last week. 66-1/2" ntn and pulling44#@27" shoots really well only 1-1/2" wide till around a foot from the tips and i put some horn on the tips(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170204_114635625_zpsdho7k6ie.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170204_114635625_zpsdho7k6ie.jpg.html)

Trade mark work by you again bub.Looks sweet.A right hand shooter to boot.Like the handle too. That oughta answer a few questions lately about glue on handles.
-
Now that's a nice bow. The money shot is all that and a bag of chips 8). Love the handle
-
Bubby, that's truly a splendid bow you finished! It's very cool to see the humble red oak board bow with those curves.
-
Thanks guys, red oak gets a bad rap and so do board bows in general, i trapped rhe back some and this prolly has 140 or so arrows flung and is sitting with almost no set, go figure huh😆

I am offended by the insulting and dismissive term "board"! These are commercially available industrially decrowned staves! Or CAIDS, if you will.
Call it what you will, that dog will hunt!

To be fair, most trilams and a good number of backed bows are board bows. ;)
And as far as board bows getting a bad rap, I see it 2 ways. 1) Most of us start on board bows, so those first few learning experiences might skew our perception. 2) A great bowyer could make a nice bow out of most woods that you can get a bow out of. However, given the choice between a red oak CAIDS (love that acronym!) and a primo piece of osage or yew, I think most would leave the oak to be made into furniture.
With that said, I'm definitely going to be working on some red oak boards in the near future, for practice at the very least. If a person can make a sweet bow from red oak, I'd bet they would do well with the "A List" woods.

Nice!
So recurves/flipped tip bows shouldn't have a pyramid or eiffel profile?
-
love it! sweet lookin bow Bub's
-
Looks very nice Bubby, nice grain in that piece of oak.
-
Thats a fine bow. Nicely done. Jawge
-
Very cool Bub I like the handle nice job !
-
Nice looking bow. I have always liked the grain in oak.
-
Nice, Bubby...pretty bows, great tiller.
I think red oak gets a bad rap, too. It seems it varies a lot in quality and density, for one thing. I bought a flatsawn 4/4 nom. board once that had TWO growth rings end to end, one of which was 1/2" thick by itself. That stuff was AMAZING for oak. Then you pic up a quartersawn board with a ba-zilllion thin rings and a terrible thickness ratio, and it's like you are holding a piece of redwood.
I spend a lot off time on other sites trying to help young, first time guys get through Sam Harper's website and get their first board bow done. Most of the failures seem to come from simply not starting with the RIGHT board, or not understanding how to build up and then narrow a handle (since most of them are after a pyramid or American flatbow after reading Sam's site.) I send a lot of guys to George's site, too.

Very nice bow.

I'm not quite sure where you got that idea but no the limbs don't HAVE to be a pyramid or eiffel tower profile
-
Bubby,
Nice looking bow!
I like the tips and the handle, what type of wood for the handle, Mahogany? and also on the back of the bow I see some dark points that appear to come from under the wrap is that a wood inlay ?

well done, like it

Thanks guys i appreciate it, Kevin i was a little scotch on the handle leather so that is just some leather to cover an 1/8" of the cork used to round off the back of the grip it was glued on before i noticed. As far as the handle i don't know what it is as it was already glued on when he brought it, its a pretty color though
-
It still looks really nice.
-
Nice bend there Bubby. I'm sure that board is happy to come back to life. Looks like you have it working close to its potential.
