I have not worked with bw before. Is hickory backed black Walnut a good combo?
-
The times I backed walnut with hickory the walnut fretted. It was years ago and could have been me. ;)

Yup, I'd probably do walnut backed hickory instead.

Use maple

I've done a few and you just need to trap the hickory. A less tension resistant wood would be better. Maple or ash would be great for walnut.

like stated ,hickory will over whelm a bw belly easily!i would make the core wide, flat and long going as thin as practical with the hickory lam and trap it.bw is pretty wood, just not top notch in compression when mated with high tension backings.good luck!

Leave a ring of sapwood on the walnut to get the laminated look...lol.
