That looks like a lot of fun but also very very cold.  What is the reason for the staggered start?  It didn't look like Chuck was in to much of a hurry.

Clint,
That's top speed for Chuck!
we start them off at 1 minute intervals so they don't get bunched up on the course. Time is used as a tie breaker, some guy's think, move slow and shoot well other guy's try to do the course as fast as possible.

No need for speed when you're good......:)

It was cold that day but Brian's (My) beard looks like it is frozen even in the summertime! Being 60 years old with short legs and carrying some extra lbs., I was happy with my time that day. Some of the younger guys  had some amazing times. Making each shot count usually gets the job done but we have used the times as tie breakers in the past! Most Everyone is just out to have some fun. It was one of those special times where everything came together just right. The Hawkeye Boys had a real good time that day! Afterwards we had our annual Wild Game Dinner and awarded the Hawkeye Traveling Deer Caller (Hand crafted by Buffalo Gobbler aka Kevin) to the next year's holder of the tradition. With the call is a hunting diary that whoever has the call that season writes down about their hunts and includes a picture before it goes to the next year's winner of the call. It is very cool to read about the hunts recorded. I lost track of how many years we have held the snowshoe shoot. I am hopeful that the traditions continues for many years after I am gone.
Here are a few group pictures from previous years.

Forgot to mention that last year I used a very old pair of Alaskan style snowshoes that belonged to Richard Zawacki (Dick was a good friend and a hell of a outdoorsman in his day. Dick has passed on and I thought it was a good way to honor his memory). Those shoes were 54 inches long, fast on the straight sections but a bit of trouble turning sharp in the tight stuff! As those shoes are quite old, I think I will "retire" them to less demanding work and not use them to race with. This summer, I added a 60 inch long pair of Ojibiwa style to my collection of snowshoes.  I plan to use the Ojibiwas this year (Bear Paws or something smaller would probably be faster but the big Ojibawas sure look COOL!) Kevin thanks for your post and bringing back some good memories today.
Take care Everyone,
Brian

Here's a pic of the Hawkeye Bowmen traveling deer call from when I won it for a year.
It get's raffled off to a different hunter each year.

Not the Traveling Deer Caller with the silver inlay but one of the calls that Kevin made for me.
