Title: A little information...
Post by: ---GUTSHOT---> on December 22, 2016, 11:57:08 am
This might not be the place to post this, but I feel this is the most looked at section. I'm a big fan of looking at all the bows people make and then post for the BOM section and I always cast my vote for the bow I like the best. Here is this years votes per month that was posted. Kinda sad that more people don't vote for these awesome bows. Come on people there should be hundreds of votes each month. Let's all support this section of the PA and Vote.

            Self Bow.  Back Bow
 Jan.      88.           88         Votes
 Feb.       n/a.         N/a.      Votes
 Mar.      174.          162.     Votes
 Apr.       122.         117.     Votes
 May.      87.            72.      Votes
June.      92.            87.      Votes
July.       96.            N/A.     Votes
 Aug.      117.         89.        Votes
 Sept.     93.           88.       Votes

How many members are there by the way. I'm wondering what the percentage of people voted.

I'm with Gutshot on this, I don't make bows myself so I'm here primarily for the bow porn and boy is BOM always a tough call around here. As gfugal said, it would be good to know the percentage of active members that vote.

To tell the honest truth, the reason I stopped voting was because I could never make up my mind. I could stare at those bows for two days and never make a solid decision. They are almost always all top notch. I know that doesn't help increase the number of votes but that's my reason.

That is sad... I always look forward to voting for BOM!  I steal all of my good ideas from others...  ;D

Here are more than 5500 members listed, more info: http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php?action=stats

for meit is a little frustrating to have so small numbers of bows on BOM and so small number votes
I'm hesitating every month should I get in or not ...

Thanks for the listing Gutshot! It says a lot.

I'm also wondering why we have a continuos smaller number of votes at the backed bow section. Do not understand that, when people vote at self bows - why not on backed?

What would be interesting is an active members stat. Yes, there are 5500 members but there have been around 15000 sign up since 2007. That means 10000 actually took the time to quit rather than just walking away. I would bet that there are only about 300-400 active members.
Getting of topic here, sorry. I will go change my notifications and try voting again :D

Simson. Your welcome

DC. I get stuck on voting sometimes also. So what I Do is go back and read everything real carefull and then try to cast my vote on who might have had some setbacks with there bow and overcome them. Or sometimes something just different we have not seen before.

I have voted every month but one since I've become a member. I admit like DC says sometimes it is just really hard to decide and when that's the case the vote usually reflects it by being really close to. Simson I always enjoy looking at your fantastic bows they are always top shelf. I know I need to post a few bows that I just haven't gotten around to yet but when I do I'll probably put at least one in the BOW. I also wonder about the backed bow vote always being lower. I do understand some members would never back their bows, maybe they could never vote for one to? Not sure but they are beautifully crafted well functioning bows and I always vote both categories.

I know this shouldnt be an excuse . but this is my excuse - ive been coming here every day for a few years now and i get very frustrated when trying to make a post or comment, vote on bom and you have to go through verification 4 or 5 times to the point i just give up and dont bother [ hope it dosent beat me this time]

Les that usually goes away after a couple of posts and you don't have to do that anymore. I know that is frustrating at first I think that's to keep the spammers out

Like bj said les, you may have been here for a few years but only 2 posts, get active and all that verification crap goes bye bye

Likely because of the more primitive aspect.

As of today, there are 5598 members. Active members, a fraction of that and people who vote for BOM, look above. If it is not active I feel, myself that it will not continue.

It is hard to find someone to take on this time consuming job if they also work a full time one and everybody should at least help show their gratitude even if you aren't looking for a moment of praise in the eyes of your friends and peers.

For my part, I check my email maybe once a week on a good week, more often once a fortnight, so I usually miss the reminders to vote.  Also, I usually only view certain sections of PA  and BOM isn't one I visit much, so maybe if a reminder was posted as a thread in the Bows sections more people might check in?

A helpful little tip I learned a few years back is to use those 2 "buttons" at top left. One is called "show unread posts since last visit", the other is "show new replies to your posts." This is always the first thing I do when I get on and keeps me current on both, what people are saying to me, and what folks are most actively talkin about.

Thanks for that tip stringman. Never seen that before!

I vote every month for both categories. Don't enter because I haven't built anything in forever.

Pearl my mom always told me forever is a really long time. I remember voting for your 3piece takedown just a few months back. Really didn't think I'd vote for a 3 piece but I really did like that one. I can understand the just being a selfbow fan but aren't sinew and rawhide backings still primitive? I'm seriously asking this question I thought they where but I could be mistaken.

I just think a lot of the folks on here prefer a piece of wood with no backing. Ever notice hard backed bows don't get the love on here? No matter how sweet they are? Its just the culture of this site. Go to Tradgang and they love a backed bow.

I agree Pearl and that I can understand it's just another rung up the ladder in skill level I feel to make a great unbacked bow. I just don't get the not primitive part unless it's fg or something like that. I believe they are still primitive as far as I know and I can still appreciate them, maybe the tools and glues we use aren't but the same could be said for most of the selfbow here too.

We all have our idea of what primitive is or isnt. You brought up a fine example. That 3 piece bow I entered took more time and brain power than any bow I've ever made. It got 12 votes because it wasn't primitive enough for voters to appreciate. One fella even said I lost the meaning of primitive when I made it. I haven't lost anything :)

I thought the old system was better when all the bows posted in a month where automatically entered for BOM...wouldnt this be a simpler system..that encourages more voters..and takes less time to organise..

Bj it's not easier to make a backed bow compared to a selfbow. There are just differant steps, if you ever planed a boo backer you would know what i mean😉 some guys just are thick headed about selfbows being the it bow. Personally i like all types of wood bows

I know what you mean Bubby. I'm not meaning it's easier I guess what I saying is that maybe you can get away with a few mistakes with a hard backing. I haven't done a bb bow and have thought it would be a big challenge. I also understand that 3 piece bow of Pearls was I big challenge, I've still got 2 Osage billets Pearl gave me I stare at from time to time. Someday I'll figure out how to use them.lol.

I used to be for no seperationd for any bow built the way we do them, one category, but then it would be nothing but Horn Bows.
