I've been toying with the idea of an archer automaton for some time... here's my first try at a basic mechanism.

She's kinda cute, Del. Just for fun? or are you planning to go full scale?
-
Very cool, Del. I love your artistic/engineering mind. 8)

I'm going to make an army of full sized ones to march on Parliament! >:D
But seriously I'll prob keep it that size and get it fully functioning as far as possible. don't know if I'l produce a fully polished and clothed one. It's purely for the fun of it... but you never know.
Don't know that it's feasible to get it to load the arrow but hopefully I should get it to pick up the string automatically.
Shoots a mile left due to the arrow being too stiff, I'll make a better more powerful bow as it progresses.
There's a lot of fiddling and fettling to get the action.

That's pretty nifty Del. Paint a playing card motif on it and it could be an archer for the Red Queen in Wonderland.

I was very impressed Del!

Cheers, but the arrow only went 280 yards ::) ;)

That is cool, I hope you keep at it and make a fully polished and clothed one.

I can't do video. Any chance you could post a photo? :)
Perhaps Pat B could do it up in paper machete. :-\

Wholey crap! That is cool.

Tiller looks to be bending a little extra in the grip ;D
Very impressive engineering Del. I see you are finding a way to occupy your free time since retiring.

Are we allowed to see the back ;) ;) ;)?
-
Gulliver beware >:D
Thanks Del

Later, when more mechanism is done and it's ready to take over the world.... (cackles wildly)

Very cool Del , good thing you are retired now, that had to take some time. ;) :)

Incredible ingenuity.
You always make the coolest projects.
-
Crazy cute Del.With a lot of cool to boot....lol.
-
That is very clever Del 8), (a little worried a full size 'Terminator' style archer will one day walk out your workshop :D).

Way cool Del. Just make sure that full scale one knows who's boss. You are one cool cat!!

It's GREAT Del! I'm going to show that to my students.

I like that :)
Here's a pic of the back showing how simple it is, just a Y shaped bit of string!
I'm working on an improved mechanism now operated with rods, hoping get it to grasp the string automatically, that first off was just to prove the concept.

Hey Mr. Cat what are you doing ...
I looked at the vid again and again. Great, absolutely great.
Wanted to ask you seeing the back and found the pic after scrolling down. I'm astound the mechanism is just that simple.
Again super nice idea, thanks for sharing.

Derek, I posted link to your vid on my facebook. Some of those fb friends would like to see vid of the mech from the back. So ingenious!

The next version will have wheels and rigid levers rather than string, operated by winding a handle probably.
I'll do more vid as it progresses and keep you guys updated.
Thanks one and all for the enthusiastic reception :)

Great for a booby trap?

Right when the automaton archers take over the world we'll know who to blame! >:(
Fantastic design/craftmanship and the movement is so organic it's brilliant! :)
